Boy Howdy!
I know that immigration isn't exactly the wheelhouse of this forum. I would simply say that application of the law (which stands in contrast to "sanctuary" cities policy) is relevant to A) the safety of the citizenry / self-defense concerns and 2) the validity of the rule of law (citizens must believe that impartial justice can be sought, if they are to exercise/uphold their rights).
That said, watch the Mayor of Lansing step in it with both feet, then roll around a bit.

Ironically the last few news stories I've seen of illegal immigrants committing crimes against people were not committed against white people, but against people of the same race as the criminal. So what would race have to do with it, according to the mayor?
