A 14-year-old boy was hospitalized and his dog killed when he picked up a government-planted, cyanide-filled 'bomb' near his Idaho home, causing it to spray them both with the toxic substance.
Canyon Mansfield, 14, was playing with his yellow Labrador retriever, Casey, near their home east of Pocatello Thursday afternoon when he bent to pick up what he thought was a sprinkler head on the ground, causing it to go off.
SNIP
It later emerged that the M-44 bomb had been placed near the home by Wildlife Services, an arm of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), which is targeting coyotes in the area.
M-44s are loaded with 0.9 grams of sodium cyanide and covered in smelly bait, in the hope of attracting animals.
When something triggers the 5-7-inch tubes, a spring-loaded trap sprays the cyanide into the face of whatever is nearby.
Under USDA guidelines, signs must be placed around the location of the traps in both English and Spanish to avoid accidents from occurring.
But Canyon said he didn't see any signs and that 'I would have noticed it because I go up there all the time.'
Bannock County Sheriff Lorin Nielsen also said that there were no obvious warning signs, although the case is still under investigation.
SNIP
Sheriff Nielsen, who described the devices as 'cyanide bombs,' also said no notice was given to authorities about their placement.
'I've been a sheriff here for 20 years and worked for the office for 39 years, and I've never heard of leaving around a device that emits poisonous gas,' he said.
Nielsen said he intended to meet federal officials next week to 'get to the bottom of this.'
He added: 'The trapper that set those for the federal government did show up, we were able to interview him and he has disarmed those that are in that area, and hopefully the rest of the county.'

Had no idea the government did anything other than use traps or hire hunters to control the coyote population. How sad, because this incident could have been avoided. From the article, sounds like this isn't the first time, either.
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!

"Hey! I have an idea! Let's plant poison gas bombs in the woods surrounding cities and villages. What could go wrong?!"
If they interviewed the guy who placed the bombs, what did he say about the missing warning sign?

I just don't know what to say about this. According to the Idaho State Journal "more than 3,400 animals have been mistakenly killed by M-44s between 2006 and 2012".
I've heard of a lot of terrible government ideas. This is one of the dumbest.

A little light reading about the history of the device...photos and the use of a .38 cartridge...
A little light reading about the history of the device...photos and the use of a .38 cartridge...
Despite the problems encountered with cyanide
ejector devices over the years, they have been consistently important for coyote damage control ever since
their introduction into governmental control programs
around 1940, and they remain important today. Minor
improvements still can be and are being made, but
most major M-44 problems have been addressed and
resolved. During 1971-1976, M-44s accounted for an
average of 8.9 % of all coyotes taken in 13 western states
(Table 3). This percentage would have been higher
except that M-44s weren’t used for 2-3 years (1972-1974) during this time because of the 1972 predacide
ban. From 1976 through 1986, the fraction of the ADC
coyote kill attributed to M-44s increased to an average
of 12.3 % in 15 western states (Connolly 1988c). After
1986 the M-44 percentage increased further, to 22.9 %
by 1990. It remained above 20 % in every year through
the 1990s, dropping to 18.8 % in 2000.
In terms of numbers of animals killed, the M-44 is
or has been the most important coyote removal method
in several states. Considering 1971, for example, Texas
and Nebraska took more coyotes with M-44s in that year
than with any other method, and M-44s accounted for
the second highest numbers of coyotes in three other
states (Evans and Pearson 1980).
SNIP
In this age of modern technology it is easy to
assume that quick and easy fixes should be available
for most problems. If this was true, however, we would
have had a steel foot-hold trap replacement and an
effective predator repellent long ago (Memorandum,
M-44 Study Team to Chief, Division of Wildlife Manage
-
ment, Washington, D. C., June 22, 1983). The invention
and improvement of cyanide ejectors has always been
an underfunded or unfunded, shoe-string proposition.
Except for the original invention of the CG and one
later instance in which an outside firm was retained
(Bush 1958), most development and improvement of
CGs and M-44s has come from government hunters or
researchers within the ADC or WS program. The greatest number of innovations have originated with wildlife
damage management specialists who use these devices
in the field. We think it will always be so, not only for
NaCN ejectors and other predation control methods but
for all the devices and techniques used to prevent or
alleviate human/wildlife conflicts of all kinds.

Anyone wondering why this is reported in the UK, but we haven't heard anything about it here?

This is an extremely stupid way to handle the coyote problem in my opinion. Those devices will get dogs, coons, badgers, bears and the overly protected wolf as well as the coyote (and, if they don't put the signs up, people). From what is in the UK article, not the US articles, the trapper should be facing charges for not properly posting the area.

I agree but perhaps the signs were swiped? Some people are that stupid and more.schmieg wrote:This is an extremely stupid way to handle the coyote problem in my opinion. Wouldn't it be safer and cheaper to just put a $10 bounty on coyote tails? Instead of kids being sprayed in the face with poison, they could earn a few bucks shooting or trapping them.

That would make too much sense. Can't have that.
