EU Cracks down on Firearms laws

Post by Bruenor »

I have a hard time believing this would have had any affect whatsoever on the Charlie Hebdo attack in France.

European Union lawmakers have voted to toughen the bloc’s gun laws and close loopholes exploited by attackers in France.

The lawmakers passed the rules on Tuesday in a 491-178 vote, with 28 abstentions.

It will force EU countries to beef up laws on certain arms that fire blanks so they can’t be easily converted to use live ammunition and require permits from people wanting to buy one.
Member states will have 15 months from the date of entry into force of the directive to transpose the new rules into national law and 30 months to put in place data-filling systems for registering all information needed in order to trace and identify firearms.

The 1991 EU firearms directive, last updated in 2008, sets out the conditions under which private persons may lawfully acquire and possess guns or transfer them to another EU country. In the European Agenda on Security for 2015-2020, the EU Commission said it would review the existing firearms legislation to improve information sharing, reinforce traceability, standardise marking, and establish common standards for neutralising firearms.

From what little I know about European gun laws I believe that the conversion of minimally demilled full auto (legal to own many places) back to firing status is where the bulk of their illegal full autos come from. They require far less than the ATF does to render a firearm inoperative.

Where strict gun laws are passed, once again, guns flow on the black market and the criminals have a defenseless pool of victims...not to mention all you really need is the keys to a truck and a crowd or a rock concert, a can of gas and matches.
God,
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can
and the Wisdom to know the difference.

Carrying a gun is a right, not a crime.

Gun control is racist.
