Multiple firearms is not an arsenal... it's an investment.

This story actually started a long discussion on carrying a round in the chamber on a friend's facebook. My most poignant response is:
But still, I have dropped plenty of firearms, have seen plenty dropped (some even on purpose as a test), and have heard stories about them being dropped. NEVER have I heard a story about the firearm discharging when it impacted the ground. It doesn't happen.
This guy had to touch that gun and that trigger for it to discharge.
Not only do stories like this hurt us in the public eye, but they make it hard for us instructors to educate students.
I'm not sure if you can read it, but here's a link to the thread -> http://www.facebook.com/copperhead57/po ... 3564415301 I started out as a thread about how this guy should attend a class he was considering, went south, and then came back to a discussion. He hasn't responded as of late, so I am curious as to whether or not I made an impact.Carrying a handgun WITHOUT A ROUND CHAMBERED limits your ability to defend yourself. Once you accept that as fact, then you must ask why you don't carry a round in the chamber. Is it because you are concerned the firearm will discharge randomly? Or maybe because you think if you drop it, it will discharge.
I have never heard from a reputable source that a firearm discharged when it impacted the ground. I have even tested a few (using snap caps) and seen several tests. Never has a firearm discharged because the impact on the ground caused the trigger to engage. Even with a VERY LIGHT trigger pressure of 3 pounds the idea that a trigger weighing a few ounces will engage when it hits the ground doesn't meet the test of physics.
What usually happens is the trigger catches on something such as someone's finger as they try to catch it.

I have one of those (or something very similar). I bought it on a whim as a novelty item. I actually keep it in the console of my personal vehicle (which is always locked in my garage until I drive it). I figure maybe some day when I rush out in a hurry and forget to pocket my normal carry, it might prove "better than nothing". Not counting on that, though.bignflnut wrote:Two minutes ago, someone else posted the same story. But, I've always wondered how this thing is safe to carry:
I would not advise buying one. even as a novelty item. I'm only out $100 so no big loss in the purchase. Just a reminder not to buy on a whim. It DID look pretty cool when Maverick carried one, though.
I didn't see that the article mentioned what he was actually carrying?

Derringer's should be carried in the half cocked position, the one i carry has three position's d- for decocked, hc- for halfcocked, f-for fire with no saftey on the gun,... i don't know if their is a firing pin guard for the decocked position if you drop the gun,...or if he was carrying in the fire position with no trigger guard that's not wise The moral of the story is wIth a derringer alway's go off half cocked. All of this is of course if that's what he was carrying.

If this had happened on or before July 19th, nobody would have cared.Cmazzac wrote:Well of course this made the news...

I'm not suggesting that he is carrying anything like the photo I posted, simply a side question about those exposed triggers.
