Harry Reid: New Power over Internet

Post by EdK »

I was listening to WLW last night (1/8/12) and picked up on a discussion of Sen. Harry Reid's latest proposal to control Internet content. He is quietly gathering support for a bill to prohibit any web site posting a link to any copyrighted material. The bill would give the government the power to immediately shut down the web site.

If Reid succeeds, this would give the government a scarry level of power of Americans. It could shut down this site when we provide a link to news articles.

According to the discussion on WLW last night, Reid has 40 supporters so far and is working toward 60.

Anyone have details on this? I have not found anything this morning when searching the Web... thought I could provide a link!

I am not a lawyer. My answers are based on research, knowledge, and are generally backed up with facts, the Ohio Revised Code, or the United States Code.

Yup... that's it.... PIPA. Thanks.

The WLW discussion was concerning the unintended consequences not specifically listed in the published purpose of the bill.

Something like this concerns me a great deal. What are the implications for politically troublesome groups like the NRA, OFCC and BFA where a large part of educating their members and the public come from providing commentary on published news articles? I think we do a pretty good job on the forums here enforcing the fair use rules to require a link to the story and only quoting small snippets.

But who decides when the fine line between fair use and infringement has been crossed? Will this be like the DMCA where the owner simply sends a demand letter and the ISP either complies or loses their safe harbor provision?

Found a link showing companies that are for and against these acts.. as well as monies contributed in support or opposition.. Is your Ohio rep in the list ?

A total of 158 corporations have signed up in favor of the bill, and only 87 against. $21 Million has been donated to Congressmen who favor the bill, but only $5 Million to those against. Thanks to OpenCongress for these insights.
