Thankfully no one got hurt or killed. The article doesn't say if the officer got his training from a former ATF agent ("Im the only one in this room qualified to have a gun")

ROANE COUNTY, TENN. - A Rockwood Police Officer accidentally fired a live round of ammunition during a “blank-fire” drill at Rockwood Middle School Thursday morning.

“We had an accidental discharge that should not have happened,” Rockwood Police Chief Danny Wright told 10News. “Nobody was ever in danger.”

Rockwood PD and Roane County Schools were working together on the drill this week to demonstrate to school staff and teachers what an active shooter situation sounds like.

During the drill, teachers, staff and school personnel are locked in a classroom with the police chief while an officer fires blank rounds in the hallway.

However, the officer’s weapon contained a live round.

Dropped the live round mag and inserted blank round mag without racking the slide?

Nobody was in danger, eh?
Somehow, when there are military/police firing live rounds in the school hallway...that might be a tough sell...

"Nobody was ever in danger" sounds like "Nothing to see here, move along!" as uttered by Leslie Nielson in a scene from The Naked Gun when all hell was breaking loose just behind him.
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!

Only cops should have guns because they're "highly trained".

Remember, it's for the children...

Speaking of unintended discharges by police in schools, does anybody know if it's legal for off duty cops to enter a school to pick their children up, say from the nurses office and still carry?

Per R.C. 2923.122(D)(1)(a), if the agency requires that the officer be armed while off-duty ("acting within the scope of the officer's, agent's, or employee's duties"), the officer could enter the school.

Otherwise, the officer is treated as any other CHL holder.

Live rounds aren't dangerous if fired by officially costumed individuals, but Mr. & Mrs. Smith can't carry 6-17 of these rounds on their hip into the same building.

Into? Mr. & Mrs. Smith can't even leave the gun locked in the car in the school parking lot and enter the building, can they? Or did they change the law already?

Nope, no change. Yet.
