new from Delaware

Post by rolltide92 »

Hi all just heard about the site from a buddy and I figured I would check it out.

I am in my late 30's married to my lovely wife of 10 years. I am a very unapologetic conservative Christian, but I do welcome dissenting opinions and ask people respect mine. The last thing gun supporters should do is fight amongst ourselves over stupid stuff like if Obama is a communist or socialist, if illegal immigrants should get amnesty and so forth.

My wife and I have been shooting since 2010. I never owned any guns except my grandfather's shotgun I inherited on the death of my father. That changed in September 2010. There was a shooting in our development ( we live in a bad area that we are probably the only people who did not vote for Obama if you know what I mean) and our car was hit. If my wife had been home from choir practice at church 10 minutes earlier she would have been shot in the leg.

We bought our first guns that weekend. We said a prayer outside the range that we would never have to use them but be ready if need be. We had discussed a gun in the past and the wife always balked. She would not even touch one. Well we bought three that day. We got her a .38 EAA 6 shot snubbie, a Glock 17 for me. Both of those were used. The salesmen said he would not recommend autos for a first timer, but said I would be more apt to be struck by lightning than have a glock 9mm jam. I also got the wife to get me a Smith & Wesson m&p15-22 since she would not get the ar15 until I "knew what I was doing"

She thought we might go shooting once or twice a year. Well we have range memberships now and shot every week until ammo got too high. Now we go about every two weeks. We both have carry permits and I am almost always armed. My wife is except when she is at work. SHe is a substitute and does not want to carry at school.

As far as hobbies go. I play guitar. I listen to country and older rock but I just play rock and roll ( Kiss, motely crue and such).

I have been a collector of knives for about 20 years I come across knives and buy and trade knives periodically. Sometimes I come across a deal and will pass it on to fellow members of forums I am on.

That is about it.

Welcome! I enjoyed your intro and have to say that you seem like fine, level-headed folks.

Here on these forums, we all give & take what we want and need from them. For me, I come here to enjoy myself, to talk guns with local(ish) like-minded people and to discuss all variations of the hobby, lifestyle and cause. But perhaps the greatest feature of our forum is that you've got a whole slew of folks that make learning the nuances of the gun & carry laws a hobby in itself. I use these forums to keep myself aware of the web of confusing laws that I need to be aware of, and I often get the idea that so many guys (off the forums, out in the real world) truly don't know all of the laws with regards specifically to legal concealed carry in Ohio.

I have no idea what your level of expertise is with the wild network of rules and regulations, but I hope you'll use the participants here to your advantage, to keep yourself & your family aware of the laws, for your own protection.

I found one little snippet in your post that seems worthy of being specifically addressed:

It could simply be the way it was worded, perhaps you are trying to say that she does not want to carry at school because it is unlawful, but that is a point that must be stressed because (in my opinion), this is a major pitfall in Ohio, extremely poor language and potentially puts folks at great risk.

The law is specific with regards to firearms on school property. In fact, you must be in the immediate act of picking up or dropping off a student if you have a firearm on your person or inside your vehicle and there are no allowances outside those specifics.

That means your wife cannot drive to work (as a substitute teacher) with a firearm anywhere inside her car, and you cannot pick her up from work either if you have a firearm inside your car, unless either/both of you can do this without ever driving on to school property.

Some schools have city streets very close to them. Many do NOT. If it's a rural school and it's off an otherwise "country" road and there is no parking on that road, legal concealed carry pretty much gets tossed out the window.

IMO, the specifics surrounded carry on school property puts so many people at risk. Teachers & staff, obviously. Depending on the parking situation, the law basically prevents an employee of the school from having a firearm anywhere that DAY. Including returning to their own home from work or where ever, no matter where there home may be. Obviously, it does the same thing to parents if any anomoly in the schedule pops up. (there are PLENTY of instances where parents must visit their child's school while -NOT- in the immediate act of picking up or dropping off a child)

The law makes it such that if you drive up with your 8 year old and let them out of the car, you may be armed. And if your 8-yr old then falls in a hole, gets hit by a bus, or chokes on a lollipop 15 feet from your car, your only legal option is to leave the child there and drive your vehicle off school property, disarm, and then run to the child.

My frustration level with this is soaring, so I tend to bring it up often.
I like to swap brass... and I'm looking for .32 H&R Mag, .327 Fed Mag, .380 Auto and 10mm. If you have some and would like to swap for something else, send me a note!

Welcome rolltide. You will be happy to know that OFCC's annual picnic is held just south of Delaware, In Liberty Park near Powell. After some months on this forum, you will likely enjoy the chance to meet some of us in person. Members show up from all corners of Ohio.
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!
