WTB - Steel gong target

Post by Morne »

So, the resetting steel target I had finally failed. The weld on the back of it to the bracket (held the rod it was hinged on) broke. I certainly slung a lot of lead at it, so I'm not mad or anything, but I realize that simpler is better.

Thus, I am looking for a quality steel gong target, now. Something that can take up to and including .223 and .300 AAC BLK without flinching. I like to leave my steel target outside so I can just walk out the back door and shoot whenever I want.

Who makes a good one? Prefer somewhat local as shipping is murder with such heavy things (though I suppose if it'll fit in a USPS flat rate box... ). As to size, I am thinking about 8" but am willing to be flexible. Maybe even a setup with multiple gongs would be nice...

I bought an 8" steel gong at the Tiffin gunshow early this year, my .222 and .556 bounced right off at 175 yards. I could pick one up at the next show on the Jan. 10th and am coming down to Holmes County on the 11th.

I bought 4 of these for our club, and they have held up very nicely. Have had to keep replacing chains, but I guess that can be expected under heavy use.

The ones I bought were 1/2" AR500 steel, they really take a pounding. They made it through several months of heavy use, and I think they will make it through a few more years of the same.

I'm in the exact same situation as I want to put a few in my woods and have been looking at this company, especially for smaller targets.

I'm glad I now have some other sites to check the out.

I think I'll go with these. Good prices and free shipping over $100 order. Figure I can go to the hardware store and buy some iron pipe, chains and fittings to make a rugged stand for it.

I'd probably make a sawhorse out of 2x4s rather than iron pipe & fittings - cheaper and easier to make and transport.

True, forgot about your intended use. And since you'll be the one primarily shooting, repairability probably isn't as much of a concern either, and the pipe will probably handle being left set up outdoors better as well.

Hi Morne, I have purchased 3/8" round AR500 plates from Bobcat Steel. He even cut a bunch of AR500 stuff for my work projects. He has appleseed target shapes as well. Good stuff.
Bobcat Steel

For my club, I mounted the steel with rubber belting so they can swing with the impact. The straps lasted about a year before I had to replace them. We shoot these targets at 100 yds.
4"- $9
8"- $27
12"- $45
I thought shipping fees were reasonable.

Birdman!!!

Ok, the Appleseed target is cool. Way cool.

Still, I think I prefer the 1/2" thick gongs.

I used a $5.20 piece of rebar from Home Depot, the same as I use for the target stands I make out of mud flaps. 10' by 1/2", put in a vice, and heat it at the spots I want to bend. I bend them two feet wide, with two four ft legs. the chains can be attached a few different ways, but I just slid them over the rebar, and then used lacing wire to hold them in place. Then you can move them around, and just stick them in the ground like an election sign.

Here is a picture of the rebar stands with the mud flaps attached, so you can see what I'm talking about.

Very nice stand. I really like the belting idea, instead of the chains.

+1 for ShootingTargets7.com. Here is a gift I set up yesterday for my father-in-law:

Image

16" diameter 1/2" thickness AR500 steel gong, Treated 2x4's, cheap sawhorse brackets, and some rebar (2ft lengths) to drive through the legs into the ground. A little paint to match his sense of humor, and it was all set.
