Trustees at The Ohio State University approved a resolution to allow some off-duty officers to carry concealed guns on campus. The university says these off-duty officers would potentially serve as first responders.

SNIP

In a statement, the university said off-duty officers from the approved agencies can carry concealed weapons into buildings, venues, and events anywhere on the Ohio State campus.
So, having armed people on campus is a positive. Agreed. (Looks left. Looks right. Waits for Wile E. Coyote moment where the earth falls out from underneath him)

But we're only going to allow the people that we approve, because only those people are trained enough, only those people, drawing paychecks from those government agencies, are able to safely use firearms. We still hate everyone else who thinks they can safely defend themselves and/or others.

This entire notion that State training and a badge gives you some extra amount of safety is amazingly false. That sacred cow needs to be served at the next 4th of July Barbecue.

It's actually more restrictive than just someone with state training and a badge.
The university said the resolution allows off-duty, sworn law enforcement officials from the Ohio State University Police Division, the City of Columbus Division of Police, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office , and the Ohio State Highway Patrol, to carry a concealed firearm on university property.
There are sadly many examples of this type of thinking. Sometimes the people in charge don't just imply it either, they come right out and say it. For example, I was listening to a forum on school security and a school board administrator flat out said that people who aren't police officers miss so badly they would be impossible of them to stop a mass shooter, and be more of a danger than not being there at all due to accidentally hitting innocent school children. The sad thing about the forum was the people on the panel could say any stupid or ridiculous comment without any questioning or rebuttal at all. Also, in the PBS tv show Guns in America, an administrator flat out said they are not opposed to guns in schools, they just require the people carrying them have a badge

For some anti self defense types, safety has nothing to do it either. I've heard on more than one occasion how people who own a gun for self defense are wanna be cops or vigilantes, who only want to take the law into their own hands, even if they are just defending themselves from harm. One of them said it's okay to defend yourself from an attacker with something other than a gun, but if you use a gun at all, you are a vigilante (in their eyes) . It's like the statement made by a LE instructor in a class in the eighties (before licensed CC) when he said to the class that the police have a special responsibility, "because only they have the power of life or death, because only they have the right to carry a gun."
