It's not about possession it's about manufacture and sale. I wonder if there's some outfit in the state or wanting to move to the state that is somehow hindered. A close reading of the code says that it's illegal to sell or furnish an ASP, a form of billy, to a security guard or a police officer; they can only be sold or furnished to law enforcement agencies. Arguably there's nothing that then allows the agency to furnish them to its officers since they are not agencies. Ditto for switchblades.

Although I'm not aware of this happening in Ohio, ordinary pocket knives can be classified as gravity knives when it suits certain political means.

Lastly I'll note that while current state code does not prohibit possession of these items a lot of municipalities do and there's no preemption.

At its core, this is about items being illegal, rather that acts. Why shouldn't otherwise law-abiding citizens be able to buy any of the items in that list? Use them to do bad things and yes, that should be illegal, but not the manufacture or sale.

As to this question:

I don't know about the others, but switchblade and springblade knives enjoy pretty good demand. Oh - and they are commonly sold at gun shows and the like, regardless of the law.

And lawyer friends in Ohio say that some are charged and typically have to plead to "something". Another of those things that is not worth my time to bother with due to that ;-).

One guy I knew from gunshows had sold all over Ohio, then he setup at a show at Gibralter Trade center, the cops took all of his stuff and ejected him from the hall, and after a couple weeks of screwing around he got his stuff back, and was told to NEVER setup in MI again.

I'm all for relaxing any regulations on that stuff.

I loved my N0. 6 Opinel knife.
After they are properly broken in they could very easily be defined as being "gravity knives".
Take one out, thumb the locking ring, the blade swings free, flip the knife so the blade is fully open, and thumb the lock again.
All done in less than a second.

The N°06 is the smallest Opinel with double Virobloc security system.

This looks like a good thing to me. Last I checked, the 2A didn't just pertain to firearms and I feel its high time to relax Ohio's laws against knives and other tools. In fact, I wish the CHL covered any concealed weapon at the very least.

They're nice for "flashy" purposes, but among "automatic" knives, coil-spring switchblades are the only ones with significant functional strength in actual use, and for that, a common spring-assisted mechanism is just about as fast and easy to open.

Is there a definition somewhere for a springblade knife? Wondering if my benchmade spring-assisted opening knife is more illegal than a run of the mill pocket knife.

I've seen that term for 30+ years in the Revised Code, and I have never seen a definition. I suspect it refers to the ever-popular (and functionally useless) OTF automatic. Spring-assisted knives are not prohibited for sale.
