Register your guns?

Post by Spidey »

Hi all,
First time poster here. I've been searching the forum best I can (still a newbie) trying to find out Ohio laws. Maybe someone can direct me to the proper link.
1. Do I have to register all my guns in the state of Ohio when I move there?
2. Does the handgun I test with for my CHL need to be registered?
3. Is the CHL designated to the weapon you take the test with? Or can you carry "any handgun you own"?
Thanks!

1. No. There is no registration in Ohio.
2. No
3. No, you can carry with any handgun or handguns you own.

Welcome to the forums and (soon) Ohio. Ohio never did have statewide registration, but some cities used to have such nonsense.

It was all ended when Ohio passed Ohio Revised Code 9.68. That was statewide preemption of all local firearms laws except:
1) Those regarding where discharge is allowed.
2) Zoning regulations concerning where a gun store can be located.

Preemption has been challenged by some cities, they lost all the way through the Ohio Supreme Court.

We're still wrestling with lawmakers about expanding WHERE we can carry at this point, mostly. And a few other issues. Study up here and you'll see why we're still fighting the good fight.
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!

Welcome! Since you are moving from California, you'll be moving to veritable paradise of gun rights. In the grand scheme of things, Ohio is no Wyoming, but compared to CA you'll find it much improved.

The big thing is notification if you have an official encounter with an LEO. And the gun buster sign and statutory off-limits areas....recommend handgunlaw website on the particulars, but you can certainly ask here too.

You'll, find Ohio gun laws to be SO nice compared to CA

As mentioned above, although better, we're still not near as far along as we'd like to be. Glad your on your way here. We can use your help.

Welcome.
As to those questions, thanks to the efforts of many here & elsewhere we no longer have any of that nonsense.
But as you've been told,we still have the "notification" silliness to deal with for now. The FOP & OSP backed it & are likely to resist it's demise.

Did Ohio ever have firearm registration?

Cincinnati had enough ordinances pertaining to firearms stores that most all were eventually driven to move outside the city limits. Brilliant!

Yes, move ASAP. In Ohio, you can carry with a full standard sized magazine inserted into your pistol and one in the chamber.

Cleveland had some form of registration in place for Cleveland residents.

And Twinsburg had registration if you bought a gun at Gander Mountain in that town.
