A lot of self patting on the back by BFA.
On the BFA website they claim they are for HB228, just opposed to Vitali's admendment to it, also taking a dig at certain other groups without mentioning them by name.

I didn't see a number but the news link said this about overriding a veto
Jim Irvine, Buckeye Firearms Association board president, said he hopes the bill moves swiftly through the Senate.
“If they don’t get to it soon they’re not going to get to it at all,” he said. “Obviously it’s a lame duck (session) and it’s a compressed time frame. We’re cautiously optimistic the Senate will take it up.”
Republicans said the bill stiffens some penalties, including for straw purchases. But Democrats called those slaps on the wrist.

At least 25 states have removed a duty to retreat an attacker before using deadly force, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
There are some other interesting comments and information in the news link. Once again the anti gun anti self side is using fear and ignorance to try to make their points. :(

In a huge bit of hypocracy, HB228 was opposed by the ACLU.

Yes. I believe 60 are needed and it had 64 votes in favor.

From a article at Cleveland.com:
By a 64-26, mostly party-line vote Wednesday, the Ohio House passed a GOP-sponsored “stand your ground” bill that eliminates any “duty to retreat” before using force in self-defense, shifts the burden of proof to the state in self-defense cases, and loosens a number of Ohio gun-control rules – including allowing individuals to challenge local gun-control ordinances in court.

The final vote on the bill, House Bill 228, came over the vocal protests of state Rep. Stephanie Howse, a black Democrat from Cleveland who said that several groups, such as the NAACP, have asserted that the bill “is a bad idea for people that look like me.”

Howse, in a floor speech, noted that the bill’s sponsors represent districts that are more than 90 percent white, leading House Speaker Ryan Smith, a Gallia County Republican, to cut her mic after she ignored his warning not to refer to other House members by name.

Smith then called for a vote on the bill, which took place as Howse continued shouting at Smith.

“You just don’t want to have any conversation about race,” she told Smith as the bill passed.

I guess a country boy like me can't understand that a piece of gun legislation is a racist piece of legislation.

History is replete with most previous "gun legislation" (i.e. gun control) having racist origins. This piece of legislation is however not racist and is a small correction to some of those previous laws.

What was BFA's objection to the bill?
They didn't object to the bill (and in fact are trying to take credit for it passing the house.) They objected to the amendment that would have strengthened it even more.

Probably. An amendment was added to the bill but it might be a day or two before we see the wording of the bill as passed.
The amendment that was passed was a "technical amendment" that didn't really change anything but altered the bill in such a way that the strengthening amendment by Vitale would have been out of order because it couldn't be applied as written.

True, but you can't necessarily count on all of those votes to be willing to override a sitting (albeit lame duck) Governor's veto. We are hopeful, however. Equally hopeful for a similar result from the Senate.

Hopeful, but quite a few good bills have been neutered by the Senate in the past.

As a point of interest, both the Senate and House voted to override a Kasich veto yesterday.

Encouraging. Which bill was that?

For those that watched the floor debate, this bill includes some new RKBA regulations for landlords of subsidized housing...did any of that come up?

Anybody got the pulse of the Senate? Will it get to a floor vote?

What are the politics of this? Does the next Statehouse group differ greatly from the current crop (not a veto proof majority)? Is it that there's doubt of Dewine's upcoming support? Is it just attempting to torpedo Kasich's future prospects by escorting him out the door with this?

Why now? What's the impetus for the urgency of the lame duck?

As I understand it, many things are discussed early on, then slow-walked and not moved on. Then during the lame duck, there is a rush to get things done. I think maybe it is the stuff that politicians are worried will be unpopular with certain demographics. After the election, they don't have as many worries, and the ones who would get angry have short memories.

This is just my observation, and I could be completely wrong. I know that I have gone earlier in the session with OFCC, but nothing was acted on. Then we went back during the lame duck, and hey-presto, it got a vote. (It sometimes gets mangled to unrecognizable in haste, so the system rather stinks.)

No.

Pro-gun bills are almost always passed in the lame duck session. That way the voters have two full years to forget it happened before the legislators have to run for reelection.
