Cannot renew prior to 90 days before expiration
Learned "the hard way" (showed up at the Sheriff's office and was sent back home...) today that you cannot renew you CHL earlier than 90 days before its expiration. I wanted to renew to take advantage of the new background check regulations, but was sent back home because there is currently no way to renew earlier than the 90 days...
Just wanted to share in case you thought about it as well...

Yup, that's been a (minor) bone of contention here. Even if you lose your physical license, you can only get a replacement, not a renewal.

Well, I'm glad I checked on here. Wanted to go renew my CCW to take advantage of the new rules, but apparently I can't. That's too bad..

Yeah, we talked about that a bunch when the law first went into affect in March of 2015. It took FFL dealers a while to start selling guns without phoning in/online sending the NICS. Some of that foot dragging, naturally, was because...government. But some stores still either won't do it or get a little foot-stompy about it.
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!

The other thing is if you renew early, you lose whatever time you had left on your license. Your new expiration date will be based on when you renew, not when your license was set to expire.

I believe this gets rectified here in about 90 days.

I didn't think they added that to the bill at all.Morne wrote:I believe this gets rectified here in about 90 days.
While true, its also sort of needed for the license to be NICS compliant. The ATF only allows a license to be good a maximum of 5 years for it to be truly NICS compliant. Sure, one could say just base it on 5 years from the issue date but I think many states would see that flaw and we would lose reciprocity with them. They want 100% compliant, not 99.99%.Luv2Camp wrote:The other thing is if you renew early, you lose whatever time you had left on your license. Thanks for the reminder... mine expires in just about 60 days.
