A good person to reach out to at the County Prosecutor's Office would be Gregg Marx. He'll give you as fair a listen as you'll get.

I'd say it's better coming from an Ohio resident to get a fair listen (as my snarky response, "so, then, since I'm not an Ohioan, the signs don't apply to me ???!?" probably wouldn't particularly help further the cause).

I left a very polite voicemail for the AgSoc (Agricultual Society).

That entity should either act, or ask their legal counsel, which should be said Prosecutor's office.

Looks like it is public owned. They also have at least 3 gun shows a year in the AAA building.

Sent today:
Dear Fairfield Agricultural Society-

Ohio Revised Code section 1711.13 sets out all county and independant agricultural societies as "bodies politic" that may sue and may be sued.

The Ohio Supreme Court case "Greene County Ag. Soc. v. Liming" also confirms that county and independant agricultural societies are political subdivisions of the state.

As an independant agricultural society in the state of Ohio, you are considered a public entity, not private.

As such, you are subject to the general provisions of state law, including ORC 9.68, which bars public entities from establishing, or allowing to continue in existance, any ordinances, rules or regulations which restrict firearms possession.

State law DOES allow the posting of buildings where public employees regularly work, such as a fair office, but it does NOT allow the posting of any open, public spaces.

In light of this, I am asking the Fairfield Agricultural Society to remove any and all signs restricting firearms possession from the fences and gates surrounding the Fairfield fairgrounds.

I have called about this earlier this month, but due to a poor quality cell phone, my request may have not been understood. I hope this email clarifies the issue.

As ORC 9.68 does allow for awarding costs and attorney fees to someone who might sue the Society, I would ask that this issue be given some priority.

I am not a lawyer, but if I can help answer any questions you might have, feel free to contact me.

Thanks!

I'll probably wait until Monday before I contact them again, if I don't hear back sooner.

Normally I would wait several weeks, but I'm hoping to get these down before the fair starts.

No. I have no plans to organize an open carry walk on opening day, October 6th (I think).

However, my evening is open on the 7th.

Left another vmail. No response. Visual check showed that there WAS a CPZ sign at the main gate that I had missed before. That makes at least 3 signs that have to come down.

No kidding?
I've driven right through the main gates before and never saw any signs,,,,

Three brick pillars at the gate?

The pillar on the far left has the sign.

I had a letter drafted to go to Gregg Marx, county prosecutor, but things got in the way and it never got out.

Now that the fair is over (Saturday), let me know if the signs are still up, so I can revise the letter and hopefully we can address the issue.

Taking the wife and son to the Demo Derby Saturday night, I'll check for signs on the way in and let you know what I see, I'll take pic's if I see any and post them here as well.

Drove by today.

The two signs I mentioned to the AgSoc originally were taken down.

The remaining sign I had missed at the main gate was covered up with another sign.

Things look good. I'll contact them this week after the fair is over and remind them about the remaining sign.
