Comparing large pistol primers in .44 Special

Post by Morne »

31 F, 64% RH, 30.21" Hg

***CHRONY DATA***
5 data points per powder load/bullet/primer combination unless otherwise noted. Chrono positioned approximately 10-feet from the muzzle.

.44 Spl 240-gr Coated FP, HS-6 Powder, 1.477-1.485" COAL
Taurus Tracker with 4" ported barrel
0.5CC (6.9-gr) CCI-300 LPP AVERAGE = 617 fps; ES = 40.4
0.5CC (6.9-gr) WLP LPP AVERAGE = 610 fps; ES = 34.5

.44 Spl 205-gr Lead WC, HS-6 Powder, 1.235-1.247" COAL
Taurus Tracker with 4" ported barrel
0.5CC (6.9-gr) CCI-300 LPP AVERAGE = 700 fps; ES = 31.5
0.5CC (6.9-gr) WLP LPP AVERAGE = 715 fps; ES = 37.4 ***4 points only***
0.6CC (8.2-gr) CCI-300 LPP AVERAGE = 848 fps; ES = 56.7
0.6CC (8.2-gr) WLP LPP AVERAGE = 846 fps; ES = 56.1 ***4 points only***

.44 Spl 205-gr Lead WC, W-231 Powder, 1.235-1.247" COAL
Taurus Tracker with 4" ported barrel
0.5CC (5.2-gr) CCI-300 LPP AVERAGE = 817 fps; ES = 85.9 ***4 points only***
0.5CC (5.2-gr) WLP LPP AVERAGE = 819 fps; ES = 38.9

.44 Spl 205-gr Lead WC, Trail Boss Powder, 1.237-1.253" COAL
Taurus Tracker with 4" ported barrel
1.0CC (4.6-gr) CCI-300 LPP AVERAGE = 719 fps; ES = 42.1
1.0CC (4.6-gr) WLP LPP AVERAGE = 724 fps; ES = 50.1

Head-to-head comparison between CCI-300 & WLP seems to show no appreciable difference. The 0.5CC charge of HS-6 powder seems to do well for either the coated 240-gr FP or the lead 205-gr WC. As usual, Trail Boss makes an acceptably good load that uses up the vast majority of the case capacity.

Interesting :-). The WW primer is suggested by the mfg to be suited for both magnum and non magnum loads ??

Bill
Have a great day today unless you have made other plans :-).

That is correct. While all of these were mere special loads I have used the WLP to great effect in magnum loads. That said, I think I prefer the CCI-350 for my magnums.

I was always kind of curious about that designation by WW. Kind of handy not needing a special primer for slow ball powders :-).
