.357 load data

Post by BigV »

I finally got all the components to begin reloading .357 for my new wheel gun.
I am having a difficult time finding load data using 125 and 158 grain lead cast RNFP with Unique powder.

I would like to keep these load around 1000 FPS.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Do you have a reloading handbook? I usually start with what my Lee book lists.

Says 6 grains as a starting load for a 158 grain semi-wadcutter.

2 or 3 here.

When I am considering the purchase of a new or different powder to my bench, Alliant is never my first choice simply because Alliant's factory provided load data pales in comparison to what Hodgdon (IMR & Winchester also), Ramshot and Accurate publish for their powders. However, Alliant certainly has some fantastic powders in their lineup and indeed, I use many of them.

Back around 2006-07, Alliant's published data was all re-arranged, I imagine some new testing was done but all the load data they had been publishing for years and years simply CEASED and they began pushing their new data that is simply bombed with ATK-specific bullets (Speer) and really, more Gold Dot than anything. Maybe the single most expensive component handgun bullet on the planet, by the way...

Sure, I will take the three-click jump to Alliant's (pathetic) online load data just for another "voice", but my absolute go-to source for Alliant powder data that I use and trust comes from the free guides running up until 2005. 2005 was the last year of them. I happen to have guides from the late-80's when the powder in question still bore the brand name of Hercules. Before the Alliant brand name and the ATK-corporate conglomerate dumbed all of it down.

BigV, I sent you a PM.
I like to swap brass... and I'm looking for .32 H&R Mag, .327 Fed Mag, .380 Auto and 10mm. If you have some and would like to swap for something else, send me a note!

My book Hornady 8th ed. lists 158gr lead, rn, swc, and swc-hp all C.O.L. 1.590"
Unique;

700 750 800 850 900 (950 Max) FPS.
3.3 3.6 4.0 4.3 4.7 5.0 Gr.

My book has no listing for 125 gr. lead

All the best, Bob.

IDK the exact bullet you have but I'm using Unique with a 125 grain Lyman 358093 resized to .357. The Lyman manual lists a minimum loading of 6.0 grs Unique for 769fps @16,600psi...and the MAX is 7.8 grs Unique for 1290fps @ 38,900psi. 1.585" is the OAL given.

A little hotter than you wanted by Lyman's cast book lists 157gr cast LSWC with H110 at 14.4-15.9gr of H110. At 14.4 it says 1216fps. From my experience with H110, it certainly lets you know you're shooting a magnum revolver! Sadly no data for Unique.

IMHO if the OP wants to get a lot of reload data for the .357 and get it cheaply...then there's no better way than to grab one of these inexpensive books. Basically they scoop up all the data from the manufacturers websites etc. and print all of it into one handy little book.

Morne it wouldn't surprise me if they do come out with one soon. I looked at all of them, and there are some not-so-common chamberings....I think the newness of .300 blk is why there is no book...yet.

All these books really are is they go to each and every powder and bullet website...copy and paste their load data, then combine it all in a spiral bound "book" of xeroxed pages. One could do that oneself :D
