Cowboy Chrony Loads .38 Special 105-gr Lead

Post by Morne »

With the sun coming out and the temperature getting above freezing I felt the urge to go chrono some potential cowboy loads:

***CHRONY DATA***

40 Degrees F, 59% Relative Humidity, 30.19" Hg

.38 Spl 105-gr LSWC, CCI-500 SPP, 3.1-gr Red Dot, 1.382-1.395" COAL
Rossi M92 with 16" barrel
1062, 1002, 1010, 983.1, 1053 - AVERAGE = 1022 fps - ES = 78.9
Taurus Gaucho with 5.5" barrel
878.1, 833.5, 836.4, 828.9, 805.9 - AVERAGE = 836.6 fps - ES = 72.2

.38 Spl 105-gr LTC, CCI-500 SPP, 3.4-gr Red Dot, 1.348-1.362" COAL
Rossi M92 with 16" barrel
1058, 1109, 1014, 1011, 1125 - AVERAGE = 1063 fps - ES = 114
Taurus Gaucho with 5.5" barrel
822.7, 806.7, 881.8, 809.1, 914.8 - AVERAGE = 847.0 fps - ES = 108.1

.38 Spl 105-gr LSWC, CCI-500 SPP, 3.9-gr Red Dot, 1.397-1.406" COAL
Rossi M92 with 16" barrel
1145, 1130, 1140, 1191, 1133, 1164 - AVERAGE = 1151 fps - ES = 61
Taurus Gaucho with 5.5" barrel
1015, 986.0, 961.2, 943.1 - AVERAGE = 976.3 fps - ES = 71.9

Just for kicks and grins I also ran some factory ammo and my old standby .38 Special handload through these guns:

.38 Spl 130-gr FMJ Federal American Eagle
Rossi M92 with 16" barrel
985.9, 1004, 984.8, 1014, 977.4 - AVERAGE = 993.2 fps - ES = 36.6
Taurus Gaucho with 5.5" barrel
785.8, 789.1, 761.4, 772.6, 792.4 - AVERAGE = 780.3 fps - ES = 31.0

.38 Spl 158-gr CPSWC, CCI-500 SPP, 4.6-gr W-231, 1.466-1.476" COAL
Rossi M92 with 16" barrel
1007, 999.6, 995.7, 963.3, 987.7 - AVERAGE = 990.7 fps - ES = 43.7
Taurus Gaucho with 5.5" barrel
721.0, 744.6, 805.8, 794.2, 813.5, 783.7 - AVERAGE = 777.1 fps - ES = 92.5

Really, it looks like the 3.1-gr of Red Dot pushing a 105-gr lead bullet is more than sufficient for CAS purposes.

Both the SWC and TC profile fed well enough in the lever action M92 carbine.

Please note that these are the first lead bullets I have ever loaded and shot. EVERYTHING before this was copper plated or jacketed.
