I need some veteran opinion... I am starting to reload for my 50 Beowulf. In looking at the Alexander chart for a 500 grain bullet (http://www.alexanderarms.com/images/pdf ... oading.pdf) they recommend Alliant Reloader #7 Powder. Can't find it anywhere. Due to availability, what is comparable?
Question #2 - I have 1 lb of Hodgdon Superformance on hand. Does anyone know if it would work in 30-06, 300 Win Mag or the Beowulf?

Re: Rifle Powder question
Can't really help you much with the 50 Beowulf, none of my reloading manuals include it. The only load sources I've seen for that cartridge are through Google, and the only one I looked at that showed anything other than RL7 for the 500 grain bullets was this set of data from a Guns & Ammo article at http://www.gunsandammo.com/uncategorize ... -good-for/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
As to your 2nd question, Hodgdon's online reloading reference at http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; shows Superformance as one of the powder choices for the .30-06 but not 300 Win Mag. None of my reloading manuals show it since it is relatively new.
On an aside, the three cartridges you mention would in my experience have very little chance, if any, of sharing a powder application due to the very different case capacity, bullet weights and velocities. As an example, RL7 appears to be a popular powder for the 50 Beowulf, especially in the heavier bullet weights, but for the .30-06 it only shows up under the very lightest bullets and quickly gives way to RL15 and 17, and for the 300 Win Mag I don't see RL7 at all, rather it starts at RL15 at the lighter bullet weights and quickly moves to RL17, 19 and beyond. Also note that the two powders other than RL7 in the Guns & Ammo chart are often used as Magnum *pistol* powders.
Code: Select all
500 gr. Hornady XTP FN 28.1 grs. LIL’ GUN 1394 fps Most accurate
500 gr. Hornady XTP FN 32.5 grs. H-110 1308 fps Second most accurate
500 gr. Hornady XTP FN 37.0 grs. Re-7 1305 fps Third most accurate
