Lead reloads

Post by Dewman »

Does anyone have any info on the lead boolits sold at target world. Looked at a few and there was blue lube all over them.
Was thinking of getting a box of them.

Got no friggin' clue what Target World is up to.

But I sure like throwing lead down range.

What caliber/load are you considering?

I wouldn't give Target World $1 unless it was the absolute last place to buy something from.

Overpriced, rude, poorly lit range, terrible gun salesmen (recommend Glocks because "that's what police officers carry"). I would say no RSO at the range, but everything unsafe I see happen at Target World I see happen everywhere else.

To answer the original question, they are probably Vance Bullets; that is who they used to have as a supplier (and probably still do) and Vance uses blue lube. The one thing I noted is that the bullets are fairly hard, at least the 38s are. This just means you have to have a reasonably stout load or you may experience lead fouling. Low pressure loads with these seem to foul worse than the high pressure/higher velocity loads.

Mreising is correct. They are Vance. I bought a box of 400 grain .458's a few years back. I can't get scientific about it, so I'll say they're "just OK"...not horrible, and not outstanding either. I did find a few duds - deformed at the base or having deep striations - but those were few and they just went back into my melting pot supply. They are very hard lead - I've fired a few through a 12" wide tree stump - and the recovered projectile looks almost new - save for the rifling marks - hardly any deformation at all. I'm sure that some of the suppliers out west, who specialize in providing bullets to Cowboy Action shooters, produce superior bullets...but the Vances are adequate if you don't feel like shopping around.

So they should be good enough to have something to put down range..
I wonder if anyone has load data for them??

Use standard cast lead bullet data, there are several sources. Hodgdon powder has good load date for their powders online and it includes lead bullet data. Many lead bullets are swaged lead and they are softer so if you use load data from bullet manufacturers, such as Hornady, you should start at the low end and work your way up as there will be pressure differences between soft and hard lead bullets. What are you loading for? I won't give specific loads but I can point you in the right direction.

Go to the Hodgdon Load Data website. If they don't have data for a 95 gr bullet, use the data for the next heavier bullet.
