.356 plated in 9mm?

Post by Loading »

Can I safely shoot .356 plated bullets in my 9mm?
I shoot .356 lead, and yes I know lead is softer.
But .001 I would think would be safe.

It all depends on your barrel size. People over on the Castboolits website report slugging 9mm barrels for various firearms and seeing sizes range from .354" to .358".

If your Lone Wolf barrel is a tight barrel, it absolutely can and will increase pressures. In fact, the current issue of Handloader discusses this issue in rifles, where custom barrels are sometimes slightly undersized to increase velocity and accuracy, but it also increases pressure and the handloads need to be managed accordingly.

This isn't exactly uncharted territory you're wading into here.

Check out the Berry's bullets web site and look at the *faq* link.

The bullets are made for 38 super
So they are just a little longer.

Longer is going to raise pressure if you are loading to the same overall length. It will probably make as much or more difference than the .001 bigger diameter depending on how much too long they are. You've got two strikes against you. I'd do a lot more research if I was you, or pass.

I shoot .355, .356 and .357 size bullets in 9mm and 38 Super, jacketed and cast. Plated bullets are more like cast than jacketed. .356 plated bullets in your 9 mm would be fine with normal loads if they are 115 or 124 gr loaded to normal OAL - but you have not told us the bullet weight, only that it is "longer". Need more info....

He's probably talking about these....

http://www.berrysmfg.com/product-i14928 ... 00ct_.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you look at Berry's 9mm, they are the exact diameter...

http://www.berrysmfg.com/products-c11-9mm_356.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Therefore, loading the 38 super as 9mm, I don't really see an issue. The issue you have is the grain, you are going to have to start low and have a chronograph to get your right load as you won't find 135 gr 9mm in any load manual probably.
