anyone had storage problems w/ wolf primers?

Post by hershey »

i had a a batch of wolf large pistol primers go bad, i had them stored w/ all my other primers, they probably got a little humid in the summer months, but otherwise normal conditions. the federal primers sitting next to them are all going bang. probably 50% or better failures, they are probably 5 years old.... any thoughts or comments?

I've got about 15,000 Wolf primers left over from my pre-2008 purchase. They continue to work just fine for me. I store them in a sealed ammo box.

Did the Wolf primers function at this high of a failure rate before the 5 year storage?

In other words, your result may be from a different cause. The Wolf primers may not have functioned well from the start. Since you are comparing to Federal primers, keep in mind that Federals tend to have a lower firing pin strike requirement from my extensive although anecdotal experience (other have said the same). I cannot run Wolf, CCI, or Winchester small pistol in my custom revolver without significant misfires (none with Federal). Single variable type experiment :P

Maybe try in a different firearm before you get out the WD40.

it was 700 left from a brick of 1000, the first 300 had no failures. they were stored in a explosion proof paint locker that osha requires for flamables etc. I tried them in 3 different weapons, and yes they looked like light primer strikes, like mabe the cup had deteriorated and softened so it wouldn't dent as crisply...
