Thanks for posting that.

As I posted to the Facebook page in response:

** NOTE ** - the student reporter @ UC asked me about contact with people near the beginning of the Walk. I answered honestly, foolishly thinking that a) the reporter was going to be with us the whole time, and b) that he would write a balanced article.

Uhhh, NO!

It should be no surprise to anyone that when you're leading a group of 70 or so nicely dressed, well armed people, the leader doesn't get questions, but after 20 or so more people pass by, THEN bystanders ask "What the heck is this all about?" - and so it was with the UC Walk.

Once I dropped back, the questions came in waves and MANY, MANY conversations were held with inquisitive students and members of the public.

AND, I learned a valuable lesson: be very guarded in what you say to the media - the same media that regularly twists facts and information when the subjects is related to firearms.

Here's a link to the UC Walk FB event page, read things for yourself: https://www.facebook.com/events/269922139835838" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

For those not following along at home, BB62 was disappointed that no one stopped to ask questions of him. Yep, he was leading the pack.

I would recommend walking at a slower pace, but BB62 only needs about 3 steps to cover a city block...

I've spoken to that class and have worked with the instructor on more than one occasion.

First, please tell us how you purport to know these things, and second, it's a Walk, not a march.
Because universities in their responses have indicated that participation in these events is an exercise of free speech.

Really?

Please share with us ALL of the universities that have indicated such a thing - with dates, the person who indicated so, and quotes of their alleged communication which supports your assertion.

We'll be patiently waiting.

CLASSROOM PRESENTATION @ Miami University

This past Thursday I was graciously invited by Dr. Amanda Gillespie to speak to her POL-345 (Politics of Gun Control) class at Miami U.

Channel 12 from Cincinnati was there, as was the local newspaper.

Professor Gillespie told the students of my background, and then I spoke about my introduction to firearms, about firearms themselves, the law, my activism, and the status of my current litigation with the St. Louis Zoo.

I really enjoyed it, and a number of students took part in multiple discussions.

One student said she had even done research on me! <gasp> Although she said she was on the other side of the gun control discussion, I of course invited her to come next Saturday - and I hope she does!

Here's a link the the local news piece, with a short video: http://www.journal-news.com/news/new...ussing-/nq864/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Okay, I'll play.
OSU Office of Legal Affairs wrote: Good afternoon, Mr. Smith -

Thank you again for your email. We appreciate you addressing this with us in a proactive fashion. Based on your representations about this event and the individuals who will be participating in it, we will not take action against students under our Code of Student Conduct solely for legal possession of a weapon while participating in this walk.
You'll no doubt recall that message from a member of the OSU legal team sent to you on 4/17/14. From the wording of the email it is clear that the University is giving a narrow exception to the normal enforcement of the Student Code of Conduct for the event, and not for open carry on campus as a regular practice.
I know you feel strongly about this, but attempting to claim that it is something that it is not can only make you either look silly in the eyes of those who know the real score or just be flat out dishonest.

The assertion made by someone who claims knowledge of various things was "Because universities in their responses have indicated that participation in these events is an exercise of free speech." (my red and bold) Note the use of "universities" (PLURAL) and "free speech"

My request was "Please share with us ALL of the universities that have indicated such a thing - with dates, the person who indicated so, and quotes of their alleged communication which supports your assertion." The just quoted sentence indicates that I recognized the plural language used in the original assertion. Furthermore, the "indicated such a thing" refers to the alleged reference to "free speech". I see no such reference in the 4/17/14 communication from OSU, and even if it existed, OSU is merely *one* university, not "universities".

So, rather than dodging the question, and making scurrilous accusations, why don't you come back with something that supports the assertions made?

I'll be patiently waiting for you to supply quotes (etc) from ALL the universities that have "indicated that participation in these events in an exercise of free speech" - and more specifically, that the university was waiving the Student Code of Conduct for that reason.

Good luck!

How's that SCCC lawsuit against OSU coming along these days?

The link to BB62's speech that he posted doesn't work.
Here's a workable link: 4/22/16 Miami speaker, students ‘very respectful’ discussing gun control
OXFORD — Jeffry Smith’s appearance in a Miami University classroom Thursday morning was more like a childhood water pistol fight than the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.
While students in Amanda Gillespie’s “Politics of Gun Control” class voiced opposing opinions toward gun control, they discussed the hot button topic without violence.
“They were more intelligent than wanting to butt heads,” said Smith, a gun activist and lifetime NRA member from Cincinnati. “This shows that people can have dialogue even when they don’t agree.”
Madeline Albert, a sophomore from St. Louis, called herself on the “liberal end” of the political spectrum. She was pleased that throughout the 90-minute class, she never felt “unsafe to share” her opinions.
I find it amusing that most liberals think that we will get violent if our opinions are opposed.
Anybody else remember Governor Strickland's opening "joke" when he spoke at the PITP 6?

Same speed as all lawsuits along those lines are. OFCC is still in a lawsuit against Cleveland filed last year. We are still under appeal from Oberlin. Heck, my department is still in the legal process of a lawsuit that was filed October of 2014. Lawsuits DO NOT move fast contrary to what everyone thinks.

Also,to all others, treading on a fine line with the lock button here. Just a warning.

The SCCC lawsuit has been blown out of the water once already. No word on when/if they'll try again, how broke the war chest is etc. By the way I need nor desire no lectures about the plodding pace of the legal system.

These open carry walks could do what they did years ago: Get the statehouse to pay attention to us with regards to good law. We don't fill their pockets with cash, but we can sure stick a finger in their eye.

How about you try out this boots on the ground advocacy yourself, join us in Oxford.

Geez...I'd say it's a success even before it's taken place. I've seen a few news reports and articles already, so it is getting lots of exposure. I certainly appreciate Jeff's efforts for The Cause and his talent at getting exposure and mingling with the crowds. Thanks!!!
