Re: Open Carry Walk Miami University
Just the dichotomy of views on campus. The university supports/sponsors events such as BLM but an open carry event has been kept hush hush. If not for the B.C.S.O., I would not have known. The college experience is supposed to be about the open arena of ideas. Just underscores to the hypocrisy. My mentioning it was not to sidetrack the discussion, just highlight the hypocrisy.

What is the purpose of the OC walk?

I'm not the speaker of the event, but to show the University that people with firearms are not a general threat of harm to the campus or the students.SeanC wrote:What is the purpose of the OC walk?
My issue is, no college has changed their student handbook to remove the no weapons violation and all have only given a student a pass on the day of the event with the mindset that it's a 1st Amendment March and not a 2nd Amendment March. I do think there needs to be a lot more of a purpose or drive behind the walks. One walk on each campus over a two year period where the college gives their blessing on a 1st Amendment basis is not very effective in my opinion. Continual walks or follow ups with pressure on the university to change their policies would be a more effective method.

I'm not the organizer either but from what I gather, it is an attempt at outreach to the students that have their heads filled with all the stuff they stuff in their heads at college. Not necessarily looking to change policy but rather to change mindsets of the students which may pay dividends down the road when it comes to changing policy. Ohio law prevents carrying on campus at MU from the legal aspect.SeanC wrote:What is the purpose of the OC walk?

Re: Open Carry Walk Miami University
Some of you may not remember that a series of OC walks helped push our legislature towards passage of licensed concealed carry. I also do not want to speak for the main organizer of these current events, but he was part of those early proceedings. So were some of the OFCC founding fathers.
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!

LAW = open carry on campus (but not in buildings) is perfectly legal. Only CC is illegal.Victory Bill wrote:... Ohio law prevents carrying on campus at MU from the legal aspect.
POLICY = no students/staff/faculty may carry, at all, on campus.

The purpose of the Walk is clearly spelled out in its description on Facebook. You may want to check it out.SeanC wrote:What is the purpose of the OC walk?
Yes, I do believe in open carry. An openly armed man is clear in his intentions. Concealed carriers are sneaks and skulkers and elitist, boot licking, political contribution making, running dog lackies of The Man. <wink> (thx grumpycoconut - OpenCarry.org)

Really? Fascinating!JediSkipdogg wrote:I'm not the speaker of the event, but to show the University that people with firearms are not a general threat of harm to the campus or the students.
Well, there was this really cool lawsuit that, as some predicted it would, went nowhere...JediSkipdogg wrote:My issue is, no college has changed their student handbook to remove the no weapons violation...

First, please tell us how you purport to know these things, and second, it's a Walk, not a march.
Do tell!JediSkipdogg wrote:I do think there needs to be a lot more of a purpose or drive behind the walks.
Purportedly, Ohio has multiple gun rights organizations that could now, or could have previously, organized and promoted Walks (and applied accompanying pressure), yet they haven't. It does makes one wonder why such a fantastic idea hasn't been adopted, doesn't it?JediSkipdogg wrote:...One walk on each campus over a two year period where the college gives their blessing on a 1st Amendment basis is not very effective in my opinion. Instead, the Walks that have been done, and will shortly be done, have been organized by one individual. Hmmm...

Miami University Announcement to students
This was sent out by Miami University to all students today.
Organized "open carry" event to be held on Miami's campus and in Oxford
All Miami
A group that has led "open carry" walks at other Ohio campuses plans to lead one at Miami University's Oxford campus and in the City of Oxford at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 30.
Ohio law permits people to carry weapons on public property.
Led by Jeff Smith of Cincinnati, the group has held "open carry" walks without incident at other campuses, including the University of Cincinnati, Ohio State University and the University of Akron.
The group will not enter any university buildings carrying weapons. Miami will have police officers stationed near the walk in order to help promote safety and protect the rights of all, including walk participants.
The university will not take disciplinary action against students under the Code of Student Conduct solely for legal possession of a weapon while participating in this organized event. Weapons are not permitted in the residence halls or other buildings on campus and students should contact the Miami University Police Department regarding storage of weapons and other information pertaining to participating in the walk.
The University of Cincinnati student paper covered U.C.'s event:
