Petition For Open Carry At RNC

Open Carry is carrying a firearm unconcealed in Ohio. OC does not require a concealed handgun license, but the practice requires intimate knowledge of the law since there are places and situations where OC is prohibited but carrying concealed would be permitted. OC is also likely to attract attention. This forum is for discussion of OC, not for debating the pro's and con's or coordinating any type of protest events.

Petition For Open Carry At RNC

Post by gilly32 »

"The right to keep and bear arms is rooted in both self-defense and insurance against government’s propensity toward tyranny. The right pre-existed the Constitution. Thus, the Second Amendment is not its source. The right to keep and bear arms is natural and inalienable; the Second Amendment protects it, and Congress has no legitimate power to restrict it." - Senator John Cornyn (R., Tex.), as reported in the National Review on July 4, 2016

It ain't gonna happen. One item asked for in the petition was for Governor Kasich to use his "executive authority" to override the prohibition of carry on that patch of private property. (Quicken Loans Arena.)

Pot stirring, and they didn't think we'd notice where this came from. I really wish Ohio's laws were enough more gun-friendly that we could push with leverage on the RNC about this. Pretty sure that the area around the RNC when it was held in Tampa(?) or maybe Jacksonville(?) Florida a cycle or two back, they had no choice but to let gun toters around the area it was being held, maybe in the arena itself. Think the (D) mayor was pitching a hissy fit but his council, law director, etc. reminded him of Florida preemption and that he should just shut his pie hole.

How stupid.

Why don't they just ask for the right to carry in the White House while on tours? Regardless of what Ohio law, the City of Cleveland, Dan Gilbert, John Kasich, Ted Cruz, Donald Trump or the RNC want, security within the arena and some yet to be defined buffer falls to the Secret Service.

No web presence for this group Americans for Responsible Open Carry leads me to believe that operatives of the DNC have just tried to lob a PR nightmare into the RNC camp, or Ashton Kutcher is waiting to jump out and say "I just punked you gun nuts!"
Ignorant or Stupid, I'm not sure which is worse. If someone were stupid, at least they'd have an excuse for all the dumb things they say.

Is it really private property? If you dig into far enough you will see that the board of directors for the controlling party at the arena is appointed by city council. Not that it helps any.

With all the public/private co-mingled funding used for arenas, stadiums etc. I flat don't know. Are government employees of any kind regularly on site at Quicken Loans Arena? If so, concealed carry, off limits there, maybe. Do they have Class D premises-consumption licenses there? If so and they're serving, non-CHL open carry, no go.

Does the Cleveland Police Department and city administration green light abuses of ORC 9.68 and U.S. Constitution 2nd Amendment rights sometimes? If so...

I heard on AM610 radio news Friday that the Secret Service has said open carry of firearms will not be permitted.

Found this from an article on Newsnet5 Cleveland
Following the creation of a petition on change.org demanding permission for the open carry of firearms at Quicken Loans Arena during the Republican National Convention in July, the Secret Service tells newsnet5.com that just wouldn't be possible.

The agency cites Title 18 United States Code Sections 3056 and 1752 which says:
Title 18 United States Code Sections 3056 and 1752, provides the Secret Service authority to preclude firearms from entering sites visited by our protectees, including those located in open-carry states. Only authorized law enforcement personnel working in conjunction with the Secret Service for a particular event may carry a firearm inside of the protected site.
The Secret Service works closely with our local law enforcement partners in each state to ensure a safe environment for our protectees and the public. Individuals determined to be carrying firearms will not be allowed past a predetermined outer perimeter checkpoint, regardless of whether they possess a ticket to the event.
This USA TODAY article confirms some of things people have already stated in this thread.
The petition, posted Monday on Change.org, sought only 5,000 signatures but has since quintupled, topping 25,000 Saturday afternoon. It was posted by an author identified only as "N.A." from Cleveland, but the user profile appears to have been deleted from the website.
It was not clear whether the person posting the petition was backing the proposal or attempting to put the party, which strongly backs gun rights, in an awkward position.
The name of the group purportedly behind the effort — Americans for Responsible Open Carry — does not appear anywhere else online and accepts online message only from networked supporters, the Akron Beacon Journal reported.

There are threads telling people to sign that petition on the Democratic Underground forums.
Here's one, but since it's in the RTKBA group it's posts are about half and half.

Please support the right to bear arms at the RNC this summer: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1172189438

A story about the person who created the petition.
Jim is a self-described liberal Democrat who intends to vote for Hillary Clinton should she become the Democratic nominee. He isn't affiliated with a campaign or any advocacy group, but did some volunteer work on Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign. Jim is no fan of guns and he's "pretty passionate" about his activism, he says.

Yup. According to http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politic ... on-n546926" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (I haven't checked it out personally), Title 18, United States Code Sections 3056 and 1752, permits the Secret Service to overrule state carry laws when it is overseeing a protected site.

I was listening to Corby show on AM610 yesterday and a guy called in to the show to say he has a CHL and is allowed to conceal carry while he attends events at Quicken Loans arena. According to this guy on the bottom of the signs prohibiting firearms and other weapons it says unless have permission or something (I don't remember his exact words). He said all he had to do was send them a letter with his reason why he needs to be armed. His reason was he has a valid CHL and rather than locking his firearm in his car parked in Quicken Loan parking where it can be stolen by someone in the neighborhood; he felt keeping it on his person was safer and allows him to protect himself when leaving the arena. They granted him permission and he has to enter the arena at a specific door but is allowed to carry concealed.
