Is he a policeman?

Open Carry is carrying a firearm unconcealed in Ohio. OC does not require a concealed handgun license, but the practice requires intimate knowledge of the law since there are places and situations where OC is prohibited but carrying concealed would be permitted. OC is also likely to attract attention. This forum is for discussion of OC, not for debating the pro's and con's or coordinating any type of protest events.

Is he a policeman?

Post by charliej47 »

:D I was over at my daughter's house and talking to her when some of the neighborhood kids came running by with my grandkids. They all stopped and said hi and I got some hugs. One of the girls in the bunch asked my grandson if I was a policeman and he said no.

She looked at me and asked "Why do you have a gun?" and I said "In case the bad guys come.". She smiled and said OK.

None of the adults realized that I was carrying even though I talked to 3 or 4 of them.

In all fairness, not many adults are viewing your sidearm at eye level.

Kids are indoctrinated in their schools that guns are bad and that they should speak up when they see one.

I think this can be healthy as "always question". Not the "guns are bad" part, but fostering a kid's inquisitive nature to ask about things to gain understanding.

You're both right, but the reaction is usually fascination, and never alarm

What they're really indoctrinated in is the forbidden fruit,,,,

If only more people understood the "Preacher's Kid" syndrome. Push too hard and you get a sort of rebellion in trying to figure out what the big deal is. Keeping someone purposely ignorant of something can often encourage them to start asking questions about that forbidden fruit.

Or worse, indulge in the forbidden fruits without asking the questions first. That's how we have kids unintentionally getting shot.

Any and every chance I have to talk to a child about the gun I am carrying, I will ask the parent if I can share some gun safety rules with them.

I ask them if they can count to 4.
I ask them if they have a good memory.
I ask them if they can remember 4 things.
I tell them to remember these four things...Are you ready?
If you EVER see a gun laying around...

the First thing to remember is STOP!

the Second thing to remember is DON'T TOUCH!

(have kids repeat 1 and 2)

the Third thing to remember is LEAVE THE AREA!

(make sure kids know what 'area' means. have them repeat 1, 2 and 3)

the Fourth thing to remember is TELL A GROWN-UP!

(make sure the kids know that ANY grown-up will do. have kids repeat all 4)

It takes less than 5 minutes and can be done at the table beside you at any restaurant.

If you can't get your schools to offer the Eddie Eagle program, do it yourself!

It's funny how kids see everything and most adults see nothing.
