Need a little clarification please
Does Ohio law provide any difference between open carry of a rifle vs. handgun?

And for those who just can't handle short, simple answers, there are no laws regarding open carry of any firearm in Ohio EXCEPT for ORC 9.68

I would caution you, however, that you may not transport a loaded long gun in your vehicle.

Yes, if the rifle is loaded in a motor vehicle, or if there is a loaded magazine which fits the rifle in the motor vehicle. R.C. 2923.16. If you have a CHL, the loaded hangun in the car is OK, but not the loaded rifle.TJW815 wrote:Does Ohio law provide any difference between open carry of a rifle vs. handgun?

I'm assuming this includes a .22 LR mag from, lets say a M&P 15-22?Werz wrote:Yes, if the rifle is loaded in a motor vehicle, or if there is a loaded magazine which fits the rifle in the motor vehicle. If the mag is loaded, and both the mag and rifle are present in the same vehicle, you have a problem.Kgolf31 wrote:I'm assuming this includes a .22 LR mag from, lets say a M&P 15-22?Werz wrote:Yes, if the rifle is loaded in a motor vehicle, or if there is a loaded magazine which fits the rifle in the motor vehicle. Until the law changes - hopefully soon - rifle mags need to be loaded after arrival. That's why I keep a bunch of 5.56mm on stripper clips.

I might have to disagree here. I tend to think a .50 cal would keep most issues running as far away as they could get...sodbuster95 wrote:Sure. Now, mount a .50 cal up there and you might run into issues...wkdravenna wrote:May I mount a turret to my truck ?

Re: Need a little clarification please
And according to the law, I would think a .50 cal could be mounted as long as it's not loaded, right?

Re: Need a little clarification please
Doesn't it say "in" the vehicle, so in theory mounted and loaded would be legal....They went as far as to make a defining cause for a motorcycle, because open carrying on person while riding a motorcycle is not "in" a vehicle , thus the clause to include a motorcycle. So the "in" makes the difference...jbrewer8 wrote:And according to the law, I would think a .50 cal could be mounted as long as it's not loaded, right?
But in reality , I believe a weapon mounted on a vehicle would make the vehicle , the weapon.....So they would hang you for AOW..

Mr. Todd's Case decided this issue.
He was convicted in municipal court, appealed to the 5th District Court which affirmed the conviction, and then appealed to the Supreme Court of Ohio which refused to hear the case.
Here is the 5th District Court's opinion State v Todd
So unless a different Ohio district court rules otherwise, creating a conflict of law, the issue is pretty much settled. Non-CHL open carry on a motorcycle is a violation of R.C. 2923.16
