Admire - Fear OC

Postby mvanlone » Mon Jul 26, 2010 12:24 pm

Guys, I love this forum. I used to come in this section and just read and read this section and think you good ole boys are absolutely crazy!!! I understand that it is legal and it should not be a issue, but I live around the Columbus, Area. Even though that I have a CHL, I get more negative feedback from the surrounding police agencies that I could shake a stick at. I admire you brave souls that can do this (OC) without the fear of harassment. I take my hat off to you (bowing) to all that can do this without being scared to death. I wish I could to this as well. How many of you guys have a lawyer retainer already setup when you perform this "legal" activity? My recent run in with CPD Helicopter and CPD Car incident the other week really put the shaking in me. How many of you live around Columbus or surrounding area OC and not been harassed? How many been harassed or gone to jail? What words of advice can you give me "young" skywalker in the black arts of OC, to make sure that I don't go to jail? I admire you guys......I would love to do this, but I am scared to death!!!! Any advice?

I've had interactions with Columbus Police, as well as various central Ohio suburban police departments. They have always been low key and easy interactions for me. Perhaps it helps that as someone in my mid-50's who looks like a white, conservative, middle-class businessman, I look less threatening than a young guy or a biker wearing leathers and tattoos.

Before someone gets riled up, I don't have any problem with a young guys or a bikers wearing leathers and tattoos. A constitutional right shouldn't be dependent upon someone's appearance anyway. But police are also human beings and the truth is that I appear less threatening and have been treated that way.

LOL...I am a white, 42 year old. I have many people come to me and say that I look like the police. I have no tattoos and I ride a sport bike. I used to be in a motorcycle club and I had resigned. All my interactions with the police never involved me wearing motorcycle club colors at the time. I am clean cut and short hair. Just for FYI....

Don't think about it, just do it. Thinking to much makes you nervous.

Worste case senario a cop will shoot you. This is where an attitude of "the Lord is my salvation, what can man do to me" comes in handy  .

I'm in my 40's & know with each passing year there becomes less and less anyone can do to me, law or otherwise. (I will use this fully when I'm over 60)

I guess we need to think of the woman willing to be arrested for not giving up her seat, than go for it.

Now, I'm off to pay some bills, OC style, atleast until I have to enter the CPZ, then I ............"disarm" to all concerned.

The best advice I can think of is to listen to the audio of members here who have already been harassed. There's a lot to learn listening to how these guys handled themselves, as well as some of the things the LEOs say. rDigitial, and Jslack both handled their situations very well, as did freedomfighter777, to name just a few off the top of my head.
I've often thought we needed a sort of "directory" of links to all the audio that's been posted on this site.

Carry a voice recorder for your own protection.

IMO,,,I too, look mostly harmless and therefore get no flack for OC'ing, although I have used the phrase "I'm an advocate for the Second Admendment and Open Carry of firearms" to explain myself a time or two.

Ok, being totally serious, Chuck & BobK, have made very good points & Chuck's advice is right on.

There are some other very smart OCers and CCers here who can offer good insight as well.

Im 22 years old and I open carry almost all day every day. The thing I do is read the forums, read some orc's and hang out with chuck and rottman. I know I was very nervous the first time i open carried, but since that day I haven't stopped. Next month, I believe Chuck and rottman are planning a little open carry meeting in Pataskala, you should come!!!

Speaking of which, how does Monday evening, August 9 sound?

I called Pataskala Parks today and got their recording.
The shelter and picnic tables are on a first come, first take, status.

I'll bring the burgers, buns, and charcoal.
Someone else can bring the 'tater salad. 8)

That work for you guys?

Sounds ok to me, if we set that as the date I will also update that on the blog. Those flyers where all gone from the gun shop today, so I will get on the ball this week and put out some more.

Call or PM me tonight or tomarrow. I'm looking forward to having a Pataskala meet.

I had talked to a trauma nurse a while back who said a local LEO had "advised" him not to OC there. At any rate, we are not asking permission nor giving a heads up, we are just doing it!

I usually wear a very high&tight hair cut and clean shave with or without a mustache. Just walking anywhere I usually get hello officer.?. I usually just nod my head and go on because it will be luck the first time I correct some one they will call a cop. Situation arises i'll deal with it but would rather not. Another thing is a guy pushing a cart with three kids usually isn't a threat.

I can honestly say the people who will notice the most are kids. You'll hear it sooner or later "mom, mom that guy is wearing a gun".
I'd rather be judged by 12 then carried by 6

If you can't get behind our troops, feel free to stand in front of them.

Yeah, let's make that the date.

By "there" you mean in Pataskala?
I've never had a problem anywhere in town yet.

I'll make sure I have my information packets for anybody who wants good information

Sounds like a plan.

Yea, he was talking about Pataskala, but he very well could have been talking out of his butt. A lot of people seem to do that, especially when talking guns LOL.

OP, take nmarietta's sugguestion and join us, twice now we have had a good time!

I spoke to the Police Chief a few years back and asked about OC...he really didn't seem to have an issue with it. The Pataskala police I have dealt with seem very gun friendly.
