Carrying while on unpaid lunch

Post by CurbedSedition »

Howdy!

My employer doesn't like guns and doesn't allow us to have them at work. We rent a space in a corporate office building with a shared parking lot. If I am on my unpaid lunch hour, drive my privately owned vehicle and choose to carry at a restaurant....can they fire me? I'm not on company time technically....

Yes, they can. They can fire you for wearing white shoes after Labor Day, too. Just after 3/21, if they tell you they fired you for having a gun in your car, you may have legal recourse.

The new law doesn't necessarily help that much. You said your employer doesn't like guns. If he knows you are openly carrying guns at lunch time, he can fire you for whatever reason (or no reason at all) if he wants.

If you carry, it's best to keep your head down and your mouth shut.

Even after the new law takes effect they can fire you for having a gun secured in your vehicle, they just can't be stupid enough to make that the official reason why you're being terminated.

The consensus is that you can get fired for anything at anytime. That being said, why would your employer know what you are doing at lunch unless you told them or another co-worker other than the rare instance that you had to use your weapon in a self-defense situation?
