Do they know?
If a police officer, sheriff or state patrol run my license plate number do they get a heads up that I may be carrying from the response on their computer without going deeper?
Had a guy tell me (A CCL holder) their screen will flash red but I don't buy that.....

Re: Do they know?
LEADS will populate an alert if the registered owner has a CHL.
I'm not sure if different departments configure alerts differently so results may vary.

Re: Do they know?
Law Enforcement Automated Data System
This system is the focal point for all data and messages entered by law enforcement agencies in Ohio. In addition to LEADS, the application also provides access to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI&I), and the Interstate Identification Index (III). LEADS utilizes both NCIC and the National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (NLETS) to process out·of·state inquires about persons, vehicles or licenses, and to send and receive administrative messages. Approximately 17,000 devices throughout Ohio access the functions associated with LEADS.

Yes. They know.
Your CHL status will cause a large alert with a purple background to pop up on the officers terminal whenever they run your Ohio driver license or vehicles registered to you.
It doesn't show up in red by default, but that might be customizable if they are using a 3rd party software to access LEADS data.
Here are the default colors and the discussion we had about it last year:

Re: Do they know?
Keep in mind that is ONLY on a LEADS terminal. LEADS makes no MDCs or MDTs and subsequent software. Therefore those colors may be vastly different. For example, all of our backgrounds are grey on desktops and black on MDCs and a CHL shows up in green on the left table of contents (so to speak on the name.)MyWifeSaidYes wrote:Yes. They know.

Re: Do they know?
Wife got stopped last Saturday for speeding in her car which is registered to me. She turned into the church lot where I was eating breakfast.
She was coming there to drop off our grand daughter on her way to work. Grand daughter came in and told me grandma wants you outside,
Wife said she was late for work and the police said she was running 40 in a 25. I said now you are real late huh??
Anyway after 15 or so minutes he came to her and handed her back her license and a warning..... Wow! Like making a "C" note in 15 minutes!
I wonder if he ran the plates....... She would have been more shook if she knew what I now know!

Re: Do they know?
The (very) few times I've loaned my vehicle to someone,
(Once was to the mother of one of my daughter's girlfriends to take several young ladies to Cedar Point.)
I was very careful to make sure that they were aware that I was a CHL holder and IF they got stopped by law enforcement the first thing out of their mouth should be:
"I was loaned this vehicle by the owner and there are NO firearms in it anywhere."
That, probably put the fear of God in her. My daughter said the mother was quite careful at obeying all traffic laws.

Telling her the LEO will know the registered owner of her car may be carrying is great way to get her to slow down AlanM!

Re: Do they know?
Unless his computer or the LEADS was not functioning, he ran the plates, you can be sure of it. Even in that event, an officer can call the dispatcher and have them do it.Gramps wrote:Wife got stopped last Saturday for speeding in her car which is registered to me.

Funny story about that: In earlier days we had regional OFCC get togethers on a regular basis. Couple times I attended ones held near Toledo, where we'd had difficulty with some cops from the area. One regular was a tow truck driver, he brought in a portable radio with police bands. A cruiser pulled into the lot and started running our license plates. After the fourth or fifth in a row came back as CHL holders, the cop said something like "Everybody in there must be a damn gun nut!" in a disgusted tone of voice, and quickly left the premises.
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!

Even out of state, they may know, depending on the state. I was stopped in northern Michigan, and I informed as required. His response was :"yeah, I know". Nothing more was said.

Re: Do they know?
He shouldn't have known. You can only get an Ohio CHL response automatically in Ohio. In all 49 other states, one is required to run a separate function to pull Ohio's CHL back. It's in a separate database. Heck, other states can't even get your Ohio driver's license back without doing a separate function. The BMV plate database and driver's license database are two separate functions. In Ohio they just happen to all come back at once because our computers are programmed that way. If they did that in every state, one response of running a license plate would take minutes to come back and be about 150 pages long (trust me, I've done it searching for people before. Luckily it's computer pages and not paper pages. LOL)OhioPaints wrote:Even out of state, they may know, depending on the state. I was stopped in northern Michigan, and I informed as required. The only state that I can think of off the top of my head that you get a response back when running their driver's license is Tennessee. And that is because the CHL is directly tied to one's driver's license file. Literally, it says "Driving Status" and then something like "Concealed Carry Status" right under it.
