Yes, you are good in KY, and TN on your Ohio license. Be sure to brush up on the laws for each state. You can get an overview for each state at http://www.handgunlaw.us.

Does that include knives, specifically the OP's dpx hest 2.0 folder (whatever that is)?djmac1964 wrote:Yes, you are good in KY, and TN on your Ohio license. Be sure to brush up on the laws for each state. You can get an overview for each state at http://www.handgunlaw.us.

I have no idea about the knives, and thank you for catching it! My reply is strictly for the firearms, someone else will need to chime in on the knife part, as I know nothing about the knife laws.JustaShooter wrote:Does that include knives, specifically the OP's dpx hest 2.0 folder (whatever that is)?djmac1964 wrote:Yes, you are good in KY, and TN on your Ohio license. It's a $200 folding pocket knife.JustaShooter wrote:Does that include knives, specifically the OP's dpx hest 2.0 folder (whatever that is)?djmac1964 wrote:Yes, you are good in KY, and TN on your Ohio license. When you spend that much on a knife, you tend to write out the make and model to help rationalize your purchase.
For example, I don't own tantos, I own a Cold Steel Master Tanto and a Cold Steel Magnum Tanto.

Re: out of state drive.
Complicating this is the fact that most states don't have statewide preemption regarding knife laws. Hence, if you want to worry about it, you'd have to check local knife laws everyplace the trip takes you to or even through.
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!

thanks for the input. looks like tn and ky are more knife friendly than Ohio. swiss army knife and a glock will do.

Re: out of state drive.
The HandgunLaws.us website also has a sub-section devoted to knife laws...not just by state, but also by municipality, where appropriate (i.e. Ohio):
http://www.handgunlaw.us/documents/USKnife.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.handgunlaw.us/documents/USKnife2.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
By both this and other resources - and one can never count on any of the online stuff to be absolutely correct or even remotely complete - it does seem that both KY and TN are more knife-friendly, and that at least in TN, there is state preemption of knife laws. That said, the definition of "deadly weapon" in KY seems to mirror our own rather nebulous laws here in Ohio (http://www.ohioccwforums.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=52259" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is an excellent thread), and that there is at least one municipality that you'll want to watch out for there, too.
No length regulations in either place, but remember that the roadside is nowhere to debate the law. Typically, most enforcement personnel judge things at the roadside by "the palm test" - open the blade, place the blade across the palm, if the blade tip is longer than one's palm, that's a frown instead of a wink. With the HEST 2.0 coming in at a spec'ed 3.25 inch length, that's going to be playing it kinda close. If you've got a clip with the Mr. DP Skull on it, swap it out with the standard or a sterile to further lower your profile, if you don't feel comfortable with carrying the knife.
In-reality, depending on where you go in Ohio, that's the bigger worry......

I would think it less a matter of trust than giving you enough rope for your hanging if needed....lar1 wrote:thanks for the response. thought I would check back in after the vacation. seems strange they trust you with a handgun, but not a knife...in ohio.
Unarmed people are vulnerable people, and criminal predators prey upon them.
