Traveling to Michigan to go shooting.

Post by Cynyster »

Hello everyone,
Just trying to make sure I am covering all my bases.
I will be traveling to Michigan soon, and I plan on taking my AR-15 & 22 rifle with me. (and my Carry Weapon of course)
I have a mini-SUV that I will be using to get there.

Any one know of any hidden "Gotcha's" that I might want to keep in mind?

I have looked through handgunlaw.us and don't see anything that jumps out at me.
(just the typical inform LEO of my CCW etc etc)

I know Michigan has some strange ideas about buying firearms but I don't plan on making any purchases.

Thank you for your time.

I would recommend ensuring all rifle magazines are empty only loading them at the range.

I do so all the time when i cross the border to shoot with my brother.
At that time, I'm usually carrying 8-11 different firearms, and around 2,500 assorted rounds.

Everything I've heard, researched, looked up, seen-
Michigan corresponds pretty well with Ohio's concealed carry laws with the major exception of alcohol serving establishments.
Wierd 51% percent of sales from alcohol, class D license situation?
And now schools?

Like ohio, with a CHL/CPL-
You can carry unloaded, cased firearms in the passenger compartment along with ammunition...
no need to seperate in trunk. IE: guns in car, ammo in locked trunk.
Magazines, filled/loaded- not a problem as long as they're not in a firearm.

Like ohio, the only loaded gun carried is to be your carried handgun. Definate no long guns loaded too.
I carry mine cleared and actions opened just to be safe/sure.
I don't carry loaded mags either... just me, not pushing the issue.

Been stopped once while driving an extended cab ranger packed full of gun cases...
Officer's (lenewee county sheriff) initial reaction at my door was shock...

Upon learning of, (mi is also a must notify state) and seeing my CHL, and i was headed to the range- he kind of smiled and asked me which was my favorite gun in the menagerie. :D

He'd stopped me cause my turn signal stayed/stuck on, and he noticed a filled passenger compartment. Thought it odd.
Let me go with "have fun at the range, be safe."

Not entirely accurate. In Ohio:
You can have many, many loaded handguns in your car with a CHL.
You can carry as many concealed handguns as you want with your Ohio CHL
You can carry any loaded firearm openly without a CHL.

Yeah this is misinformation. You can have a dozen loaded Glocks laying on your car seat in Ohio as long as you have a CHL.
