Did micro-drills out of Ben S’s book, focusing on hand speed on the draw and trigger finger speed.

Ive been doing basic marksmanship practice when dry firing, and focusing on recoil management when live firing lately. I’m seeing good results on the target from it.

Messed up my right trap doing overhead presses, and I’ve been out of the gym waiting for that to recover.

Stumbled into this trade - a Ruger SP101- 3 inch 22lr with actual sights.

Smaller than a k, bigger than a j, and cheap to shoot. I’m thoroughly enjoying it, and I anticipate it would prove to be a lovely training setup. Beneficial for me due to shooting double action

Switched from Hogue G10 grips to new factory grips on the 226 and did ladder testing on new loads. I’ve never shot groups that small with this gun before, consistently. Seems like the aftermarket ‘upgraded’ grips were not fitting my hand like the factory.

Went back to 224 control levers on the 226 as well, decided the ability to get a higher grip without fouling the slide release or decocker was with the trade off for having smaller lever to hit on the reload, and this prevents the decocking lever from moving around with my support hand.

Grabbed some used (unused, damaged box) Pachmyer checkered renegade wood grips for the SP101 - it doesn’t squirm under double action now, real test is at the range. They might be a bit too big, but for $25 I’ll modify them if needed to fit better without worrying too much.

I've ran out of Winchester 231 and am now using Prima V. I didn't get to shoot beyond 7 yards due to the rest of the range being a bog, so the groups are just 'roughing' things in so I can see if there's a drastic change in powder charge before I start to mess with OAL to dial things in.

The chrony was being very finicky due to the bad overcast. I wanted to do ladders of 10 rounds each, but could only get strings of 5 (1 string of 4). I really like the initial results, much more consistent than Win231 with much less smoke and a smoother recoil impulse at the similar velocities. The fact that it's $13-15 for a jug, and each jug is 1.1 pounds, means that my dollar goes further with the powder too (10% volume discount off the bat basically).

You should be able to view the chrony data as an attachment at the following link (if not, it's a reloading journal)

Went to the first IDPA match of the year this weekend. Man, it was ugly. I forgot my 3rd mag, which limited my ability to take makeup shots.

First stage had a piece of tape over the 3rd target as a 'belt' and you had to shoot below it, stage was mirror imaged on the right and left. I blasted the center of the targets and set the stage for my performance with 34 points down right out of the gate. Yikes.

On one stage, I tried to keep count to 10 and did a reload on the move - I counted wrong and there was still a round in the mag, so I got hit with a procedural on that one.

Next stage had freestyle/strong/weak shooting, and it was apparent that I have neglected strong and weakhand shooting. 1 non-threat hit, and a disgusting 21 points down.

Part of this was the lack of live-fire training and the limited dryfire that I've done. Part of it was mentally allowing past mistakes to impact the present events. All of it was exposing the rust that needs to get worked on.

Yeah, try to do the dry fire more. It's helped me.

55 rounds through a 9mm LCR at a headshot target, 7 yards distance

150 rounds 9mm P226 bullseye, rapid fire, working on the sights telling me when to shoot, not the reset

Been doing dryfire with the revolver, focusing on front sight movement with varying speeds of trigger presses and finger positions.

Spent 2 hours picking up 3/4 a 5 gallon bucket of brass yesterday.

I've been listening a lot lately to some podcasts, specifically Primary&Secondary in addition to my usual Ballistic Radio. Yesterday's podcast was all about medical gear/care and how context and abilities drive what gear is usable, by whom, and where/what to look for in training.

For some reason it drove home the point to listen to Varg Freeborn's sessions on Primary&Seconday with his inputs on the high-order criminal and primal violence. It's very enlightening, and he brings a perspective that is unlike any you are likely to ever hear from - Very unique background: civilian that grew up in a violent environment; experience in multiple confrontations; charged, convicted, sentenced, and served, only to later regain all his rights and move on to training in the LE world.

There's a lot of stuff brought up in here that I wish people talked about more, and this may be the first place I've seen it explicitly discussed in the civilian self-defense context:
- Self control as the core of mindset
- Everyday communication style and an indicator of fighting personality
- Attachments as a source of stress
- The influence and mutability of perspective

^ Varg's stuff is gold. It's very, very unique.

He's got a great book out: https://www.amazon.com/Violence-Mind-Tr ... B07BGJFD7L" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - that's the Amazon/Kindle version, but there's also a print version from his website: https://www.violenceofmind.com/product/bookorder/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Taking his introductory handgun class a couple of years ago was what finally consolidated my mindset for me: that "mission statement" which I now consider core.

I’ll be ordering it off his website - get a signature that way for the same price 8)

Anyho, a bit more detail on all that brass I picked up:

Spent a few hours on Sunday picking up brass after a match at the local club. My compact Ammo-up isn’t the greatest - it’s a new tool, so I’m giving it a benefit of the doubt that it’s my lack of technique at this moment. My stand-by nutpicker worked as well as always. Not perfect, but good enough, and much faster than picking by hand. I didn’t do one bay with a bunch of brass due to the mulch, as it would require me to pick by hand, and I’d rather not do that if I don’t have to. I happily settled for 2 bays with high brass quantities, 1 with medium, and 1 with low.

The efforts gave me 3/4 of a 5 gallon bucket worth of brass for 2 hours worth of work. I’m sure there’s some .380 mixed in there, but the majority is 9mm, .38 Super/comp, .40, 5.56, steel 7.62x39, and some .45ACP. Next step is to sort it all.

The way I go about this is the plates with slots that many folks use, successfully. I took my old vibratory tumbler, removed the bowl, and mounted a 5 gallon bucket on the threaded rod. I then put the plates on top of the bucket, and dump in the brass. The video below shows how quickly it is to sort .45ACP out of 1/4 of that bucket of brass (about 2 minutes).

Mix and repeat for the other 2 plates, then put the .45 plate back in with the .380/9mm separator.

I was thinking that I saw his notification on FB that he was no longer doing the signatures - just didn't want you to be disappointed if you didn't get an autographed copy, that's all. :) Either way, it's a great read.

He still teaches at Alliance PD from time to time, you can always catch his John Hancock there! 8)

It’s free, and long but full of {inappropriate language} gold. Lots of strong language in there, but get past the p.c. And you’ll find some amazing stuff.
