March 2016 Matches

Post by dl1911 »

It's that time of year again! Matches are starting up at some clubs and there will be more starting up in April as well. As always, check with the club ahead of time to verify the time and date. Also, many clubs have moved to online registration before the match and limiting the number of shooters. Looks like more clubs this year than last with many picking up 3-Gun. Still working on getting dates for some clubs and events but pretty solid for March. That said, short reminder before the list.

I want to take a moment to remind everyone to BE SAFE when handling guns. The other week at the BASS match at Stonewall a competitor had a negligent discharge while re-holstering his gun during a stage of fire. The 9mm hardball round entered his boot, went through the top of his foot and exited out the bottom of his foot and through the bottom of the boot. Obviously, his finger was on the trigger when he tried to re-holster. The injury did not look too bad and the EMTs took him away quickly for treatment.

I cannot stress strongly enough how important it is to keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. This man was not a new shooter, so the ND can't be blamed on that. He looked to be in a big hurry to holster, even though it was off the clock, and we have to remember that holstering is just as dangerous as drawing. It is important for all shooters, new and old, to remember the safety rules. Let's all take some time to think about these things and review the safety lessons we have learned over the years.

You can't shoot a big enough gun to miss 'em dead.

Just a note that some matches are slightly different from in the past. First off is Stonewall's BASS match this coming Saturday. Going forward, they'll be having a maximum of 30 shooters. If 30 people have signed up when you arrive, all you can do is watch. Last month's turnout of 38 people was just too much even if there hadn't been the one issue.

Second is for those who shoot IDPA at Ashland Lake Gun Club. In the past it was a shotgun start with open registration when you got there anytime from 10a-11:30a with shooting to start at 10:30. This year they have moved to practiscore. Match registration is currently open for the match on the 26th and is limited to 60 shooters. In addition, there is a shooters meeting at 9:30a and the match will start at 10:00. No more shotgun start as they go to squadding as well.

Just signed up for their April USPSA, thanks for the link. Will 4 mags on my belt be enough for the production division, or should I get more pouches?

I'm considering taking a friend to one of the "BASS" shootings at stonewall in the next month or two if our schedules work out. He's looking to get his feet wet from something other than static range shooting, but not sure if he is interested in full fledge classes so this seems like a start.

I found a thread on Reddit that seems to cover the basics of how the event goes. What time would be early enough since the 30 person limit? Any other advice for 2 first timers? Is IWB appendix allowed?

https://www.reddit.com/r/OHGuns/comment ... _schedule/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Write up from reddit---

"""""Pick up a mag holder too if you've got the cash.

Here's what you'll need:

Gun

At least two magazines, some stages have mandatory reloads. Depending on your gun you may want more. My glock for example holds 15 in a mag, so I bring three mags. My father only holds 8 so he brings 5 or 6. Mag extensions are allowed.

Box of 50 rounds, unless you plan to sign up for a additional rounds. In that case you'll need a box per round. Most people only shoot one round because until everyone is finished to shoot your additional rounds.

Holster, IWB is allowed, you holster just has to fully cover the trigger guard.

Mag pouch/carrier. This isn't 100% needed, but it makes it much more convenient, although If you're shooting a revolver it's MUCH easier with one. If you don't have one, just stick mags in your pocket.

Eyes and ears.

You'll show up, sign in at the register and pay your $10 entry fee and get your score sheet. Get there early, because the order people sign in is the order that you'll shoot.

The event takes place in the back range.

If you carry concealed, let the range operators know when you get into the range. It's a cold range so guns must remain empty and in your holster at all times.

You'll hand in your score sheet, gear up, load your mags and holster your gun. I load all my mags, stick two in my mag carrier and keep a loose mag in my back pocket.

At 5:30 the range operators will walk through the course. There are three lanes. The first person will shoot lane one, and so on. Then they'll switch until all 3 people have shot all 3 lanes, and the next group of three will go.

When it's your turn, you'll step up to the firing line, and the range operator will ask you if you understand the course. If yes, you'll be instructed to load and make ready. You load a mag, chamber a round and reholster. If you're shooting a DA/SA gun, I believe you have to start with the hammer down (not cocked). He'll ask if you're ready, you say yes, and he'll tell you to stand by. You'll hear the timer buzz and that's when you draw and start shooting.

You are timed until your last shot, so when done wait for the range operator to ask to clear your gun. Drop the mag, eject the chambered round and point the gun down range and pull the trigger to show its empty. Reholster and wait your turn to shoot the next lane.

Scoring is the same as in IDPA, so look up the scoring procedure online. Scores will be emailed a few days after the shoot.

That's really all there is to it. The staff is really helpful so just tell them you're new and they'll be happy to answer any questions you might have.

If you like it, I can give you information for the local IDPA shoots in medina, which is a bit more intense but an absolute blast.

I think I covered everything (haven't had my coffee yet) but don't hesitate to ask if you have questions."""""

By all means come out! Normally, if you're there by 5p, you're good to go. IWB is fine but not appendix. Must be strong side hip holster only. Sometimes, for those who are just starting, they'll have you bring it up boxed and start at low ready.
