Weapon retention at its best

Post by ApexShootingTactics »

The last two weeks I was so honored to have been part of the FASTER training. CCTG and BFA brought me on to help teach the class. During the class I instructed a block on weapon retention. Basically I instructed on what to do if someone grabs your handgun. During the training we use Red Guns and Blue Guns. I have conducted this same period of instruction numerous times and never had an issue with a Red Gun or Blue Gun until the other day. As a student was employing a technique we actually tore a red gun in half. Crazy, I have never seen anything like it before.

I've seen lots of blue guns. Why red?

When the gun was torn in half, was the person holding it injured?

Apex, if you'd spent the last 32 years in the fire/EMS racket like me you'd know there's nearly nothing "unbreakable" out there to train with or even use in the field. Let people (okay mostly the guilty parties are strong-like-ox men) use gear with adrenalin flowing and almost anything is possible. I
While I was temporarily in charge of buying EMS equipment many moons ago I could see salespeople inwardly cringing whern I'd as them to let my guys field test some new gizmo for a week. Heck one time I was the anvil-breaker, seeing if I could get out of some soft restraints the vendor had touted as "escape proof". It wasn't easy to do but then again certain drug users or insane persons would probably have ben able to do it easier than I did. He seemed more upset than surprised when I handed the straps back to him broken, he knew he shouldn't have tried to sell them as "escape proof".
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!

No one was injured. I was holding one end and a student was holding the other. During the retention drill it tore.

As for the color. Red Guns were around before Blue Guns. Now replica training guns are made in a variety of colors.
