6.5 Creedmoor

Post by Bama.45 »

I'm looking to buy a decent long range rifle. Been looking at the Savage 10 FCP SR in 6.5 Creedmoor. The reviews on the 6.5 Creedmoor are all singing it's praise.

my question is, has anyone here shot that caliber much?
"Lord, make my hand fast and accurate.
Let my aim be true and my hand faster
than those who would seek to destroy me.
Grant me victory over my foes and those who wish to do harm to me and mine.
Let not my last thought be 'If I only had my gun."
And Lord, if today is truly the day you call me home
Let me die in a pile of empty brass."
Amen

You might want to read this thread on the Virginia Gun Owners Forum:
http://vagunforum.net/general-discussio ... 27187.html

One of his new toys is a Ruger Precision Rifle 6.5 Creedmoor.
His first time at the range produced some impressive (to me) 3 shot groups at 100 yds.

Yeah everything I have read about that round is impressive, like it is on par with the .300 Win. Mag out to 1200-1400yds.

Do a bunch of reading and talking.
Everything I have heard is it is capable of great accuracy, especially at long range, but like the 6.5-284, the peak barrel life is (supposedly) not much more than 1500 rounds.
I have seen a customers target from their initial zero session, and it was very good.

hmm, that's good to know. I had read somewhere that it was supposed to have a longer barrel life than say the .300win mag and other big caliber rifles.

The barrel life thing is all about what accuracy level at what point is still acceptable for your use.

My goal is to be able to hit a cantaloupe at 600+ yds lol

I used to be able to hit groundhogs at 500 with a 22-250.
Today, my rifle is capable, but I'm so rusty I need 3-in-1 oil just to think about it.

As a side note, no matter what caliber you choose, put some good glass on the rifle. Vortex, Leupold, Nightforce, etc. all make some nice stuff.
I bought a pair of Weaver Super Slam's (got a heck of deal on them), then a Leupold, and could not believe what I missed out on.
My problem now is I under-estimate the range, simply because I can see much better.

I'm not a long range expert, but, having done some, if I was kitting myself out today, I'd get a Savage 6.5 Creedmore with the adjustable cheek rest and Leupold or Nightforce optics with minimum 15x and most likely 22-25x magnification. That works out to 33%-45% on the rifle and 66% - 55% on the optics in general dollar terms. The difference between a 1.0 MOA or .75 MOA rifle is less than the practical difference in cheap vs quality scopes. At 600 yards, your group is 1.5" larger with the 1 MOA rifle but you can easily lose that much and more with a crappy scope.

I used to think that the old saw about spending the same on your scope as your rifle was dumb. Then I shot some of those pricey scopes at long range.

This is my thinking right now. It may change as I learn more.

No doubt good glass makes a big difference in long range shooting. You can't hit what you can't see. I have already been looking at Night Force scopes.

I'm shooting a 6.5 cm that I had converted by Short Action Customs. Love the caliber. Previously shot a .308. They said to figure barrel life at 2.5-3k rounds.

A friend shoots an RPR in 6.5 cm and his is very accurate. The RPR is breeding like rabbits at the long range matches! :P
For the money and it's modularity a damn tough one to beat. Also can be had in .243 which is also an excellent LR caliber.

I think they dropped 243 and added the new 6mm Creedmoor in the RPR.

Because once you've repackaged the 260 Remington, might as well repackage the 243 Win/6 mm Remington too.

Interesting- wasn't aware of the change.

What's nice too is you could get a second RPR in 5.56 as a trainer and still pay less then many custom rifles.

+1
Bet the brass is not as cheap as .243 either.... all for no performance gain.
