I ship firearms almost daily as part of my job.
Post Office is cheapest, but a non-FFL can't send handguns thru the mail, and USPS requires a declaration on each shipment.
UPS and FedEX , we send 2nd day air,and adult signature required per their reg's. Still, if it going out west, it might run $35-50 to ship.
The outside of the box cannot have any markings to indicate a firearm is inside, and you may want to insure it.
Most UPS Stores will not accept a firearm, and you will have to go to a hub, then declare what it is.
"If" something were to happen, and it was not declared, you probably won't collect any insurance. I do not know if there are other penalties involved.
The above is about pistols; long guns can go ground.

All this came about not because of regulations or law, but from shipping employee's stealing.
The shipper's decided that the shorter time period that air shipments are in terminals give the "employee's" less time to change their destination.
