Lightweight AR carbine

Post by jeep45238 »

I'm wanting to build a very lgihtweight, KISS AR over the next few years. It won't be a high round count item, and will likely stay with iron sights. All said and done, I think this can be done for a reasonable price with mid to high grade parts - I already have a lower, pistol grip, charging handle, a few misc. leftover small items. I'd like to put a adjustable gasblock on eventually to take advantage of the lower weight bolt carrier group, but can't see the logic in ripping off the barrel's gasblock before I see how it runs as is.

So - let me know what you think. All prices prior to tax/shipping if applicable.

Upper: Around 55oz (3.3lb) with sights - $622
AIM - Light Weight AR .223/5.56 Nitride 9310 MPI Bolt Carrier Group-$90 8.5oz
DSA HGT Titanium Long A2 .223/5.56 Flash Hider 1/2X28 - $30 ?oz
FAXON FIREARMS 14.5 IN. Pencil .223/5.56 4150 QPQ Nitride Barrel - $160 17.5oz w/ gas block
GUNTEC USA 15" Ultra Lightweight Thin M-LOK System Free Floating Handguard with Monolithic Top Rail - $100 10.8oz
Spikes Tactical M4 Upper Receiver "SlickSide" - $102 7.26oz
Spikes Tactical Mid Length Melonited Gas Tube - $15 ?oz
Daniel Defense Fixed Sights - $125 2.8oz
BCM Large charging handle - already own - ?oz

Lower: Around 35oz (2.1lb) - $130
DSA Complete Buffer Tube kit - $30 7.5oz (buffer would be put aside)
BATTLE ARMS DEVELOPMENT Light Weight Butt Stock -$70 3.17oz
Spikes Tactical ST-T2 Heavy Buffer - already own - 4.2oz
USGI lower parts kit - $30 - 5.5oz
Anderson lower - already own - 8.7oz
Magpul MAID grip - already own - 4.1oz

Except for a small part I might be missing, that should be a complete 5.56 AR that weighs in at 5.4lb empty with sights, for about $750 worth of parts (full retail prices).

Unless you are just into doing it for a hobby you could buy one off the shelf for much cheaper.
Although I have a Colt with bells and whistles my M&P Sport with a white light is my favorite HD carbine. I wouldn't want anything lighter.

For fun - and haven't found a downside to a well tuned lightweight rifle- especially in this caliber

I think that's a really well-thought-out budget light-weight build.
