Happy "switch" for a Mini 14

Post by sparky43040 »

I know Ruger makes an auto version of the Mini 14 and was thinking the trigger group was about the only difference.

Can the trigger group be purchased, get the "stamp", and installed on a standard Mini 14?

Where can I get info on cost & legal stuff?

Thanks John

I'm no expert on Class III stuff....but AFAIK you absolutely cannot do that...even if you buy a tax stamp and do paperwork. If it wasn't made and registered with the feds before (and by 1986)...it isn't available to a private citizen..

I think I bought the Mini in 84 or 85...it was after the guy used a full auto Mini in a self defense situation.

I was "thinking" it was doable then....thou I'm not sure now.

Thanks John

No, I mean it had to be registered as a machine gun before 1986...or else it is illegal for civilian ownership. The receiver btw is what makes it a machine gun, and I don't think changing out trigger parts have any impact. You might want to browse this link to the 1986 Gun Safety Act....I think the answer is somewhere in there..."Part B" I believe.

This is correct - if it wasn't on the register as a machine gun by the 1986 date, you can't make it one now.

Absolutely illegal. The machine gun registry was closed June 86, if it wasn't on the list then it will never be, barring a miraculous re-opening of the NFA transfer registry.
Doesn't matter when the gun or Full Auto conversion kit was made, it had to be on the registry before it was closed.

I believe the select fire version was the AC556.
They are out there, for legal transfer, but you will pay thru the nose for it.

And at that, all you have to do is watch reruns of The A-Team to see how inaccurate those guns were.
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!
