The Life of M1 Garand #356836. (video)

Post by JU-87 »

The Life of the M1 Garand #356836.

Slide show and video of a rifle, from it's manufacture in September, 1941, to range firing on April 10, 2016.

Barrel is dated January, 1949. It guages 7 at the muzzle and the throught reading is 8. This barrel is nearly shot-out.

It could still easily hit an enemy target at 100 yards, and likely beyond. :)

Thank you CMP.

Take it back up to CMP,& have them replace the barrel with a new one.

I am going to buy a Criterion barrel from the CMP ($190), and install it myself, with a friend's help (and tools). :)

CMP armorers will install it for you for free, if you want.

Checked it myself online. The CMP will not do it for "Free":
Item # Description Price
CS165 Basic barrel Installation and Headspace (Price shown is for labor only and does not include the cost of the barrel. See CMP Custom Shop Inventory list for current barrels available.)This service includes the removal of the old barrel and installation of a new barrel. The chamber will be finish reamed to give proper headspace within military specifications. Applicable for standard length and contour .308 and 30-06 barrels. The take off barrel will be returned unless directed otherwise. Used GI barrels can also be installed but due to high headspace failure rate, fee will apply whether successful or not... $75

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I may be acquiring a M1 Garand and carbine that I used to own. If that happens, I would like to get them re barrelled, if too late for this year, will shoot for next year. They are not CMP guns, and I am not a member of the CMP. Is taking one or both of them there and buying a barrel there the best option, or should I just try to find a gunsmith locally? I live in the midwestern Ohio area. Camp Perry is probably a 4 hr drive.

I am told the Armores will no longer install barrels for free as in the past. I recommend Shuffs for the work, top notch quality work and good prices. I have had him work on several rifles for me in the past and was very pleased

I took the Garand in this video, to the CMP Eastern games (May, 2016). I bought a new Criterion barrel there, and a CMP armorer installed it for $75.

I shot in the 2017 CMP Eastern games with this rifle, and scored a Bronze medal. 8)

I don't know how far you live from Camp Perry (Port Clinton), Ohio, but consider attending the 2017 National Matches, and buy/ have your barrel installed by the CMP amorer in the CMP trailer.

You will have an AWESOME time!

PM me with any questions.
