Range Reports

Post by jabeatty »

Please post new range reports as replies to this topic. No specific format will be enforced, but a somewhat-standardized layout would probably make this thread more useful. Some off-the-cuff guidelines:

* Put the manufacturer's name and the exact model number in the Subject line. For example: Glock Model 21, 1st Generation

* Repeat that same information in the body of the post

* Specify if the firearm was new or used when acquired and give an approximate number of rounds fired

* Try to be as descriptive as possible in your initial report

* Try to keep unrelated comments to a minimum; thread drift is deadly in a "resource" thread like this one. :)

****************************************************************************************************************************************************************

In an effort to improve on an already great idea, I've put together a linkable index for our range reports. This is a work in progress. There were many range reports/product reviews before this thread was started. If you posted one ages ago, or are aware of one, send me a PM with a link to it - I'll add it to the index. Also, if you have any ideas how it can be improved further, let me know.
Best,
NavyChief

With NavyChief's retirement from OFCC, I've taken over the maintenance of the index. As with NavyChief, if you post a range report send me a PM with a link to it and I'll add it to the index within a day or so.

JustaShooter

Springfield Armory Ltwt. 5" 1911, .45acp:

Post by Brian D. »

Springfield Armory 5" Lightweight 1911, .45acp.

The concept of a full sized, reduced weight 1911 style pistol has long appealed to me. Mine is an older 'Loaded Series' with flat black finish and all the 'Loaded' goodies on it including ambidextrous safety and night sights. It weights approximately 27 oz. empty. The only things I've added are a set of McCormick slim stocks w/thinner bushings and hex head screws. I also put some 3M Safety tread tape on the front strap. Not liking full length guide rods, and in an attempt to lighten the gun by an ounce or two, the recoil plug and guide have been changed to the 'G.I.' style.

I bought the gun lightly used, and have put a few thousand rounds of various types through it without incident. This one isn't picky about magazines, so it is carried with a Wilson 8 rounder on board, with two more of the same toted on the off side. Through most of the year I carry it in an IWB leather holster from Blackhawk, when carrying in cold months or while at the range an Uncle Mike's kydex belt holster holds it just fine. In either case it is carried at about "4 o'clock" on my belt, immediately behind the second belt loop of my pants.

All in all it may be my favorite concealed carry firearm.

(How'd I do Mr. Beatty? :) )

Browning Hi Power Practical Model, .40 S&W:

Post by Brian D. »

Browning Hi Power Practical Model, .40 S&W caliber

Another year-round favorite. The BHP 'Practical' model is blue-over-satin chrome, mine is the .40 caliber version. I have added a front-only Novak tritium sight, and to the front strap of the frame, some of that black 3M Safety tape that I like so much. Oh yeah, the magazine disconnect somehow came out too. (This is an individual preference, and not something we need to bandy back and forth about here, if that's alright.)

Bought it like-new used with three 10 round factory magazines, perhaps three years ago. About 1,000 rounds of all kinds have gone through it without problems. It is normally carried IWB in the same Blackhawk leather holster which holds my 1911s so well. It also fits nicely in the Uncle Mike's kydex belt rig made for 1911s. This trick works with most holsters designed for the 1911 pattern pistols, your results may vary.

I like the .40 BHP well enough to own a second one set up the same way, that one being a standard flat black Mark III. (Not a bad idea to have two of the same basic model, for several reasons I won't bother going into here.)

GLOCK 21 SF

Post by Jake »

GLOCK 21 SF

Old Report mixed with an updated one......

Had the opportunity to finally hit the range with my newest acquisition.

I didn't put as many rounds down range as I would have liked, but here's what I found.

This full sized frame handles the recoil wonderfully.

I was shooting Win. Ranger SXT 230 gr. JHP's and WWB 230 gr. FMJ's.

All these rounds punctured the paper targets with ease.

Big holes that I'm not used to seeing compared to the 9mm...but I got used to it in a hurry.

The accuracy of the WWB surprised me. I placed 6/7 rounds in an area the size of a "small tennis ball" at 21-23 feet.
One round got away from me, and was low. left.

The SXT's seemed to travel high and left (could have been me I suppose).

My main goal was to test the SXT ammo for reliablilty and to test the mags that came with the gun.

All functioned flawlessly.

While the G21 is a tad big for CCW, I think with the right holster, and especially in the cooler months, one could do so.
I just may.

* Edit... I decided to run some errands this a.m. wearing the G21 in a nylon Gunmate (like an Uncle Mikes) IWB holster @ the 3:00 position. Wow! I literally forgot I had it on.
So I retract the statement that it may be too big for CCW.

The picatinny rail is a different look for Glock and I'm not really sure of any advantage having it compared to the third Gen. rails.

It's highly unlikely that I'll add a Tac. Light, but it's nice to have the option.

Having limited experiences shooting .45, I cannot make too many comparisons, but I found this very easy to shoot.

Straight factory set up. no mods. done.

*Updated*
9/11/07

Shot again last night @ Pistol League and was very impressed.

Very accurate @ 25 yards.

I was shooting reloads-
4.6- 4.7 gr WIN 231
230 gr FMJ RN
OAL 1.275

Super manageable recoil, and the brass basically fell at my feet.

This gun appears to have very little selection in the way of holsters for now though.

I'm sure that'll change soon enough.

Edited 9/17/2007

Started using a nylon slide holster, until I can find one more suitable to my liking.

Have been shooting multiple targets, one handed and prone with this gun.

Accuracy and reliability are a definite plus with the G21 SF.

It continues to impress!

Kel-Tec P-3AT "mini" review

BTW - some may recall I developed some rather severe FTE issues with the P-3AT. Removing and reinstalling the extractor and tightening down with a drop of super glue in lieu of loctite seems to have corrected that. The "first round failure to feed" issue remains - next up, polish the feed ramp.
Total repeal of ALL firearms/weapons laws at the local, state and federal levels. Period. Wipe the slate clean.

Para Ordnance C7.45 Companion LDA

Post by ParaC7 »

Hey fellas,

When i first got my Para (Here she Is This is "Glenda")Image

, i loaded it up with 230gr Speer Gold Dots, Had More fail to feeds than I did shots. Turned out that the ogive of the round was just off a bit for my gun. The the slide would slide the round out of the magazine, but the edge of the hollow point was catching on the feed ramp. This in turn was reseating the rounds and deforming the tips of the rounds, heres a pic Image
The bullet on the right is brand new, and has not been loaded into the chamber. I called Speer and they refunded all my money and had me send them the defective rounds for research. I have since switched to the Winchester .230gr SXT. I have not had a single fail to feed with the SXT. they slide right up the feed ramp and into the chamber with no problems.

As for general shooting, this little gun has stolen my heart, It is dead on with every shot, and is very comfortable to shoot. I have no problems with the winchester white box and have yet to have any kind of failure with the white box stuff, just getting expensive at almost 30 bucks for a hundred rounds. the 3.5" barrell is perfect for CC, It is equivelent to the officers model in size. I carry it in a galco SSS (Side Snap Scabbard) OWB holster. Image
Gun Control means using both hands and hitting your target.

You want my guns Hillary???? SURE you can have them..................Bullets First!!!

Taurus 24/7 PRO .45 ACP

Post by Whirlwind06 »

Taurus 24/7 PRO .45 ACP

Put about 170 rounds through my 24/7 last night.
50 rounds of Wolf 230 FMJ
100 rounds of reloads 230 Copper plated
About 15 or so of WWB JHP 230

Accuracy was good for the first time out, not sure I like the straight 8 sights though. I may get a set of 3 dot hi-viz that I saw on Brownells. I was on the paper most of the time but seemed to be shooting low. Not worried about it. The first few range trips with a new pistol, is more about breaking it and function checking it for me. Plus I know that most people shoot low when learning to use these sights.

Recoil was not bad. I had a few 1911s in the past, but this was my first polymer framed .45. Trigger was good, reset was very shot and nice. Might get a rubber slip on grip just to see how I like it on this pistol.

Only problem I had was with the mags. I had about 5 failure to feeds where either the round was stuck nose down in the mag or the round would be wedged nose first into the top of the chamber. So I guess I will be calling Taurus to get 2 new mags. Not the first pistol I had with bad mags out of the box. Doubt it will be the last.

Over all very happy with the gun.

Para-Ordnance Warthog 45ACP

Para-Ordnance Warthog 45ACP

I acquired this gun NIB, looking specifically for a 45acp that was easier to conceal than a 1911, but still keeping the 1911 type features.

The doublestack magazine was not specifically what I was looking for as much as a grip that fit my bearpaws. A singlestack gun of small size tends to leave a gap in the palm of my hand, allowing the gun to cant as I fire. The double stack width helps correct this, and the little wedge on the bottom of the mags give my pinky finger somewhere to call home.

I have fired many hundreds of rounds through this, with no problems.

IMO this gun is great for any "encounter" distances you may face (my typical practice with this gun is 15yds) but is not a 100yd tack driver.

I could go on and on in this thread :D Is there a limit on the number of entries?

Sig Sauer P229 - .357Sig and .40S&W

Post by WBL_2006 »

Sig Sauer P229 (in .40S&W and .357Sig).

I acquired this gun used in a trade for my G23 from a member on another forum. He is a Bail Enforcement Agent and it was his duty pistol. Some light holster wear but that is all. It will be a house gun primarily for me and I've always heard good things about Sig Sauer pistols.

Model: P229 with factory .357Sig barrel. a .40S&W conversion barrel, Trijicon Night Sights, and Hogue Grips

Today I ran 50 each of WWB .40 and .357Sig. Also ran 25 of Ranger Subsonic JHP in .40S&W. I plan to run more WWB and JHP (probably Golden Saber and Fed HS) soon; I do not think there will be any problems based on today.

No issues today at all. Everything fed and ejected perfectly. SA has a crisp trigger break and distinct reset...DA has a pretty strong pull to a crisp break. Different than what I am used to, but overall I like it. Pistol is very accurate, fits my hand well, and has a very controllable recoil (all steel pistol). This was first time firing .357Sig and could definitely tell an increase in power with recoil still very controllable. The only odd thing is the fact that I am a LH shooter and the pistol is set-up with RH controls. Not a major issue since it is a decocker pistol and not a manually engaged/disengaged pistol.

Overall I am very pleased with this pistol. I now understand why Sig Sauer has a good reputation. I would not hesitate obtaining another Sig if finances would allow it.

Springfiled Armory XD9 service (Used)

Post by Sevesteen »

Springfiled Armory XD9 service (Used)

My first semi-auto was an XD40sc. Later, I started in an informal IPSC-style league. The XD wasn't particularly suitable, primarily due to short sight radius, but also magazine capacity and the small grip. I bought a used Glock 34 (long-slide 9mm) but I was never quite comfortable with it. I started looking for an XD to replace it with--Either 9mm or .45acp, at least a 4 inch.

OFCC fourm member XD put an XD9 service up for sale at an excellent price, so I bought it. Came with the standard XD gear--Holster, dual mag carrier and loader, (I now have three sets...) plus a small light that mounts to the rail. The gun was as new.

Took it to the range yesterday, and worked with the shot timer from the XD gear holster. Overall, I was equal or slightly better than my Glock shooting, despite the shorter sight radius. The holster sits higher than I like for this type of shooting. I've got a leftover JIT slide, I'll try that next.

Mags drop free cleanly, and the ambi mag release is as easy to operate as the extended button of the G34, and far better than the Taurus PT99 I'd tried.

I was also experimenting with different grips. I tried a grip advocated by some 1911 shooters...except instead of keeping the safety down, my thumb kept the slide stop down. Oops. I guess that's what they mean by "you can't run everything like a 1911".

Shot all Walmart White Box, no failures.

I've moved the light to my wife's XD40sc. The light is bright for it's size. Switch has a momentary on and a locked on setting.

Browning Hi Power Mark III, 9mm

Post by Brian D. »

Browning Hi Power Mark III, 9mm

Hello again. My latest writeup concerns the most recent version of the FN/Browning 'Model P-35', as my old-fashioned friends like to call them. I have two of them, in the matte finish, and alternate between the pair for carry duty. The Mark IIIs come with ambidextrous safeties, which are certainly more user friendly than the small, left-side-only from previous versions of this firearm. Mine originally sported the factory fixed sights, but have since been switched to Novak tritium both front and rear.

Both were bought in low-miles used condition, and have each digested maybe 2000 rounds of various types. No malfunctions that I can recall save those related to weak-springed practice-only magazines. Have typically used the Blackhawk IWB holster designed for 1911s when toting. Sometimes at the range I'll go with a kydex Blade Tech OWB belt model for ease of multiple draws and reholsters. (Allow me to note that there is some interchangeability between 1911 and HP holsters, this is a 'try it for yourself' proposition.) In any event the holster is worn at about the 4 o'clock position, with a single or double magazine pouch on the offside.
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!

Crimson Trace Lasers....

Post by Jake »

Crimson Laser Grips

After a very productive shoot today, I decided to give a quick Range Report.

Using the CT on my G19 and 26 (They don't make them for the G21 SF yet) has been very impressive.

Set up to POA (point of aim) with my factory sights from 3-17 yds, these grips provide impressive and fast target acquisition.

Doing Mozambique drills verified this.

The shape of my grips has not been affected enough to make holster selection a chore. In fact, all my holsters easily accept the guns with or with out the Laser Grip installed.

I have made it a practice to remove the grips from time to time. I feel that I shouldn't become totally reliant on them, in case of a failure.

The CT's make a great training tool too. Dry fire exercises go to another level.
You can see how steady and smooth your trigger pull is.

If possible, try to pick up a used set online. Deals to be had.

Also FWIW, they have customer service that sets the standard.

Ranger SXT Ammo....9mm 127 gr. I think...

Wish I had taken some pics...I didn't have my camera at the range with me.

I took along an OLD block of modeling clay (aprox. 6'' block) to the range.

It seemed pretty dried out. I thought it'd explode perhaps.

I fired a round of SXT from about 17 ft. into COM.

Open a wound channel aprox. the diameter of a tennis ball.

Sweet!
:D

I couldn't locate the bullet.

Bummer!

Glock Model 19, 3rd Generation

Post by Beekeeper »

  • Glock Model 19, 3rd Generation
  • Used G19 with very little wear...probably less than 100 rounds through it when I purchased it.
  • I purchased this gun a month or so ago and have now fired about 2000 rounds through it. The gun has been fired with no malfunctions over the past few weeks, and with great accuracy (I can shoot this gun better than my G35). Today I put 800 rounds through it with a buddy of mine from the Indiana State Police. We practiced numerous drills including: shooting while moving, double taps, strong and weak hand shooting, etc with no malfunctions to speak of using most of a case of CCI Blazer Brass. Overall I am very impressed with the gun, and am now carrying the G19 instead of the G35.
When firearms go, all goes. We need them every hour.

Glock Model 34, 'Practical/Tactical' 9mm

Glock Model 34, 'Practical/Tactical'

Picked a used one up at a show recently. It appears to have been shot very little, the owner just said he was "culling the herd" of things in his safe that had been neglected too long. This is a 5" bbl. variant that features factory provided extended slide and magazine release levers, and 3.5# trigger pull. (The same size firearm is available in .40 S&W chambering, it's known as the Model 35.) The gun normally features adjustable sights, but the previous owner had swapped those out in favor of Meprolight tritiums front and rear.

Had time to give it a brief test firing yesterday. Naturally it ran perfectly with all the types of ammo on hand. Accuracy was on par with any other Glock I've tried, maybe a bit better due to the lighter trigger pull. And recoil was a non-issue, even with the +P fodder tested.

Typically these longslide Glock 9mm pistols give you at least another 75-100 fps. velocity compared to the standard or midsize versions. Will have to find out for sure at a later date.

Been rummaging around at home for suitable carry gear, no reason to suspect that holsters I've previously used with a Model 17/22 won't suffice. IWB may be a little less comfortable with the G-34 however. Not going to start toting it until after another successful range session, and some drawing/dry fire drills are completed to my satisfaction.
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!
